And really I don't give a darn if people call me a Gringa....it tells me more about them than it does about me. And then I floor them by speaking Spanish, which usually blows their minds
The modern form of the word was used by Mexicans when U.S. troops were in search of Poncho Villa and were always singing a song Green go the lilacs. Oddly the Spanish were using it as a term for foreigners long before that in Spain. Same word different circumstance and meaning. Sort of like the word Gay.

I wish more people in Miami spoke Spanish. It's one of my favorite thing about visiting there.

Never heard gringa in Cuba, they say "yuma" (to all foreigners carrying hard currency including Cuban Americans), "Yankees" (more propaganda than anything else)..and of course "yankee imperialists" which is almost a relic.
Never gringa.
In some Latin American countries, a "gringo" is anybody with fair hair and blue eyes, not specifically American...just like "huero" in Mexico, racial cnnotation.
Yeah, Cubans don't say Gringos they say Yuma.

Gringo was a historical label Mexicans soldiers gave to USA soldiers (from all backgrounds). In Colombia, they say "mona" to label a blonde girl. In Peru Gringo means "foreigner" and could be used on anyone, even on Peruvians, who are not Native American looking. They don't have to be blonde, light skinned, or green eyed to be labeled as gringos.
