Hello,
I am a Florida native moving from a very rural redneck part of North Florida down to Miami for college and work. I have been looking at apartments in multiple areas but always end up in South Miami or the East Little Havana area. My worry is that up north Little Havana has a reputation and South Miami seems like a commute. How safe is East Little Havana and would it be smart to get apartments with street parking and with my work having me arrive home late at night.

I do not speak Spanish fluently but understand enough to get around if its spoken slowly.

Ill be working/going to college at University of Miami
My budget is likely around 1200-1300 but I like like less if possible.
Ideally I am also looking for an apartment/house with washer/dryer in unit.

Coming from up north I was originally going to buy a house but housing prices are nearly 4 times what they are up here.

EDIT:
I will mostly be at the jackson campus

Nice go canes! Alumnus myself with my wife. Check out villas of pinecrest complex. 5-10 minute drive to campus. You can easily get a 2 bedroom unit there. Also check out Ludlam point; also a great option for that price. Friends, my wife and I have lived in these complexes while going to UM. Great prices and very nice units. For ease of access to metrorail to get to Jackson villas is the best due to its proximity to dadeland station.

I have a few offers I am looking at in that area however I am a little worried commuting from Dadeland to the Civic Center every day. Google tells me its 20-30 minutes on the metro, I was trying to look for something a little closer if possible which is why I was looking at offer in East Little Havana. Thankfully I have at least a month before I have to make a decision.

Honestly you are better of taking the metro to Jackson. Significantly cheaper, don't have to drive on US1 and much faster. Also you can live in dadeland of pinecrest which is on another planet compared to little Haiti. How many bedrooms are you looking for?

Most of the doctors and lawyers that live south commute via metro. Park their cars in dadeland station and take the train.

No way you'll get to any of the UM campuses from Pinecrest in under ten minutes, except maybe at 5 am. For medical campus, more like a half hour.

I lived there for 3 years, went to UM for undergraduate and graduate school. Villas of pinecrest is on the borderline of pinecrest. Trust me I know the time it takes to get there. I also did my clinicals and anatomy at Jackson... I think I know what I'm talking about
