The Temporary Protection Status in place for haitian nationals, since 2010 ends in July.
News outlets talk about, possibly 58,000 people who may be deported.

Yet, the Temporary part of the status should have given them all a hint. Also, after 7 years, no one took steps to branch off into some other legal status? I'm no immigration lawyer but I'm sure there are ways.

Remember that to qualify for another status, you need to either have a American citizen relative or at least a legal resident family member - OR - to qualify based on an employer who can sponsor you.

You can also qualify for an EB-5 visa if you've got 500K to invest, but probably not many of those in the Haitian community.

Many may actually have no path to get legal status.

all TPS will expire between may 20017 and 2018 :

Also, seems that Honduras and El Salvador (both expiring in early 2018) account for even larger population

Why?

Do these people have to leave the US before that date? What happens if they don't? I'm asking serious questions, I know nothing of these laws. (BTW, I'm a US citizen).

That's the problem with giving someone temporary status. There must be an end date and those given it must understand it and agree or be deported on the spot. I agree if there is an avenue to get a different status then it should be explored but if you wait until the end date and then try then it's on you. My problem is that tax payer money will be used to send these people home.

Please review the chart and look at the Liberians... they've been here 23 years... history has proven that we lack the political willpower to end their status and send them home.

Yeah, I'm confused how and why this would affect North Miami. Just because there are a lot of Haitians living there? Most of the Haitians that own property in North Miami are permanent residents that don't need to worry about this.

Nobody will care until they start deporting "illegal" Cubans in the future. Then again, with all the financially successful Cubans already here, the likelihood of a Cuban immigrant finding a path to permanent residence is probably a lot higher than it will be for Haitians.
