I'm going to visit Miami in September.

I'm going to return to some areas I lived in (briefly) in Ft. Lauderdale years ago.

I've been learning Spanish consistently for a couple of years.

I know that obviously, Spanish is widely spoken in Miami.

I don't know Miami well. I only know of Miami Beach and know Lauderdale much better.

I'd like to be in the vicinity of where I can hear it and hopefully casually converse with people in Spanish.

Such as bars, cafes, etc.

Does anyone have any places they can recommend?

Thank you.

You will hear Spanish spoken in the metro areas of Miami and Orlando. The Spanish language is spoken by over half of the population so it shouldn't be to hard to practice.
Try Little Havana if you want immersion.

Where can you practice Spanish in Miami... everywhere.

Honestly, what kind of Spanish do you want to speak...

Cuban - little Havana or Hialeah
South American - Doral
Homestead - Mexican

Most other areas will be more of a mix.

You need to tell people that you are practicing and trying to improve your Spanish. If you don't do this, then they will speak English to you. If you tell them you are learning Spanish, everyone is willing to use spanish in communications and will help you get it right. Congratulations on your effort. I would recommend nonthreatening social gatherings...the food truck venues outside Magic City Casino brings large groups of people amongst each other sitting at long tables.

I learn with teachers now from Mexico, Central America, Cuba and South America, so I understand the spoken forms of all.

Thanks for the break-downs Ann Ryan. It helps and it's also interesting.

I'll be in the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami area, but cheers for the note on Orlando.

As someone interested in Spanish, why does Orlando have a large Spanish speaking community? Curious.

Go to "El Palacio de los Jugos" on Flagler and 57th and try to speak English to anyone there - if you manage to get two English words out of one of those Cubans, then I'll pay for your congris, masistas de puerco y yuca con mojo.

Did you know that Hialeah has the highest percentage of Spanish speaking population in whole country? Yeap, with 92% of residents reported speaking Spanish at home, Hialeah beats any city in Texas, California, New York, New Jersey, etc, etc. So, go to Hialeah and speak Spanish to anyone there that you'll have a 92% chance that that person will speak Spanish back to you - the other 8% probably speaks Creole or Mandarin because not even the English radio stations can be tuned there.

FYI: Don't go to Doral, Venezuelans there are too snobby and full of .... - they are better than you, so they won't help you learn Spanish. Anyway, all you may be able to learn from them is "Vergacion", "chamo", "Mi gordo" and "Arepa". If you really want to learn some Venezuelan-Spanish, then come to Weston where you'll find more educated Venezuelans - still snobby but not so full of it.
