I lived in Coconut Grove for 7 years and recently moved to Brickell. The places I most often find myself are Brickell, the Grove, Coral Gables, South Miami, and the Dadeland area. I forget Miami Beach is even there. I think I end up in Miami Beach once or twice a year. One of those trips is usually a Holiday Season office party dinner. The idea that Miami is defined by Miami Beach may never have been less true than it is today.

Miami Beach is safe but 12AM-5:30 AM it can get little sketchy on Ocean Drive, Washington, Collis etc... Clubs left out and thugs roaming around that time.

Avoid Ocean Drive and Washington

Yet another thread based on overexaggerations and hate. When we gonna have ones based on facts, and real subjects talked in the community?

Yup. Because all those third-world countries have an average house price starting in the low millions. And have some of the best schools in Miami. And some of the top-rated restaurants in the country. And luxury shopping. And every other car is a Ferrari, Bentley, Lamborghini, or Rolls Royce. Sounds like a 3rd world country to me!

And of course the jobs suck - it's a recreation area. You shouldn't be trying to make a career in food service. That said, it's one of the few places in the country where a server or bartender should easily be able to make a comfortable 50-60k without having to work terribly hard.

Sounds like your friend just can't afford to live here and probably should have been on the mainland in the first place.
