My information was not inaccurate: Miami, January 19, 1977. I had to update hundreds of records when I recorded plant damage. I'll never forget the leaves of philodendrons melting due to cold damage or the cycad leaves which looked as if a blow torch had seared them. The smell of rotting vegetation lasted for weeks. Marc, your two information sources gave two different dates, one was January 17 and the other said January 19. 1/19/77 is correct. I lived and worked in Miami Dade from 1973 to 2016.

Temperatures were below freezing for over 12 hours. The lowest temp recorded where I worked was 26° and we were near Biscayne Bay. There were brownouts or rolling blackouts due to high use of electricity (heaters) and our irrigation/sprinklers at the nursery froze up. The lowest temp was around sunrise.

Temperatures had been in the 70's and 80's prior to this. The plants had not 'hardened off' and were especially prone to cold damage.

I looked on my phone and its 83° right now. What the heck!!!
Florida winters are odd. I never lived in Miami but I spent 7 years in the Fort Lauderdale area which is about 30 miles north.

In south Florida you will never have as cold a winter as in the northeast or even as cold as north Florida. There are years where you won't even need a heavy jacket all winter nor a space heater.

Now I live in the Fort Myers are and 2 days ago it was 83 and today it was down to 41 overnight. We had a cold spell around Halloween where I needed a space heater, I use an oil filled electric radiator, for 2 nights. Now this is the second cold spell, usually on mild winters it will hit around January or February for a night or two. So don't expect cold in December because in south Florida we can be in the 80s any month.

37 Years Ago: Snow In Miami « CBS Miami

I was living in W. palm at the time and there was reporting of Snow Flurries as far south as Miami.

There was snow in 49 or all 50 states at one time I believe (mountains of Hawaii may or may not have had any).

My night shift on the beach in Palm Beach was the coldest I've ever been in Florida that I remember I didn't have a jacket in my closet that was warm enough for the front that came through that week.
The snow was not 37 years ago bro. Almost 41 years ago. And the temp in Tampa was nothing like what we had during the super freezes in the 80's. But snow stuck in the shadows on the roofs at school after lunch as i remember it was 95% cloudy that day. Now March 3rd 1980 saw a low of 29 in Tampa.

I wasn't debating 1977...You are claiming I was wrong about Snow Flurries in S Florida in 2010 when its easily proven by googling it.

Sorry Marc, I didn't mean to claim that you were wrong ...... I remember the cold in 2010. The temperatures were cold for so long that some of the experts felt that plants had died due to their roots being damaged by cold soil. After this theory was suggested, one of my co-workers regularly measured soil temperatures in various areas where we worked. She did this on a weekly basis, year round, until she retired in 2015.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of a cold front coming through Florida this time of year is the impeccable cloudless sun filled blue skies and cool air.
