Tancredo's Miami speech canceled
Restaurant cites threats, worker gripes
By Anne C. Mulkern

Article Last Updated:12/13/2006 05:38:22 PM MST

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., has cancelled a visit Thursday to Miami, which he recently called "a third-world country" because of its large immigrant population. (Post)

Miami -- U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo's planned speech Thursday in Miami -- a city he compared to a "Third World country" -- has been canceled amid threats of violence and complaints from workers at a restaurant where he was to appear.

Tancredo, R-Littleton, canceled his flight to Miami this afternoon after his aides and a local chapter of the Rotary Club, which had arranged the speech, failed to find an alternative location.

Tancredo had planned to speak to the club, which meets at the Rusty Pelican restaurant in Key Biscayne, Fla. But managers at the eatery decided the planned appearance by Tancredo would cause pandemonium.

"Short of Fidel Castro coming to the restaurant tomorrow, there's not a more controversial person who could come here,'' said Rusty Palmer, regional manager for Specialty Restaurants, which owns Rusty Pelican. You call Miami a Third World country (and) word gets around pretty quick.''

Tancredo last month spurred outrage in Miami when he said it resembled a "Third World country.'' He pointed to what he said was high crime rates, low high school graduation rates, and a lack of people able to speak English.

A threat against Tancredo reportedly was called in to The Miami Herald newspaper, and police believe it was credible, Palmer and Tancredo spokesman Carlos Espinosa said.

Additionally, other threats were called in to police, said Espinosa, including one from a person who said "they were going to put a bullet in Tom's head.''

Rusty Pelican employees told management today that they were not comfortable working at the event if Tancredo were there, Palmer said. The restaurant's staff is about 80 percent Latino, as is the clientele, he said.

The restaurant also received "more than 100'' calls from citizens criticizing the facility for allowing the speech, Palmer said.

After Tancredo's comment that Miami resembles a Third World country, Gov. Jeb Bush, a Republican congresswoman from the area and a top hotel invited Tancredo to visit and discover the area's attributes.

"The governor and everyone who invited Tom to witness Miami's greatness probably spoke too soon,'' Espinosa said. They have a perception of Miami that doesn't jive with reality.

"What says Third World Country more than a bomb threat at a speech by a politician?'' Espinosa said.

I wouldn't live in Miami if you paid me a million dollars. What a crap hole.

If you long to live in a third world cesspool, pay a ridiculous price for a home only to watch your property value plummet because of high crime, nastiness and overcrowding, then come to Miami!!

Tom Tancredo was right. He simply had the cahone's to state the truth.

Don't be fooled into thinking you're safe though. It's coming to a community near you soon. You won't be able to escape it either.

Not only won't we be safe but I am beginning to fear for Tancredo's life or his family members if we can't stop this madness. Tancredo for President!

"I wouldn't live in Miami if you paid me a million dollars. What a crap hole"

I agree, and I look forward to get OUT as quickly as I possibly can, like the majority of Americans are at this point. As stated by Time magazine in their recent article about Miami, 20000 more Americans leave Miami each year than more in from other states. Only people moving here are immigrants from third world countries that are leaving their lives as oppressed to come here and oppress others and behave like savages who refuse to learn English.

He's a chicken. Everyone knows that people in Miami would shoot you but are too lazy to make a bomb. After all when's the last time there was an actual bombing in Miami? The threat was a hoax and the guy just needed an excuse to avoid a previous engagement to make a speech. Of course Miami IS a third world country and only getting worse. Oh by the way, tourism seems to be down, in my area therew would be pale white notherners walking and biking around here. So far none, just darker skinned workers bused in from Miami. Oh yes and a friend just got mugged on Miami beach by ....you can guess the race of the assailant. Also see how safe Miami is, the chiropractor was killed outside of Houstons. If you go to Miami don't show off what you've got.

I know I'm late to this thread, but Miami is now occupying one of my brain's foreground slots since I'm here visiting my parents

I read the Tancredo article and I don't think the label "racist" was called for. As a politician, yes, he should have chosen his words more carefully. I don't know Tancredo's background but I'm sure anyone coming from middle-America to South Florida would have a similar reaction, you feel like an outsider mostly because of the language barrier. Now I've lived in Miami since 1979, and I've seen my fair share of "will the last American please bring the flag..." bumper stickers. I happened to have enjoyed to the latin/white/black flavors of Miami (though a lot of that now is so different than the 80s). Tancredo though is right in the theme of his statement which is border control- it has to be addressed, the economics of why illegals come here and the companies that hire them.

Tom Tancredo is forcing the House to deal with illegal migration and I fully support that. His choice of words is poor, but he's making a statement. On one side you've got the corpulent Ted Kennedy blustering away in ultra-liberal blah blah while stuffing millions in his pockets and enjoying immunity from prosecution for killing someone. On the other extreme you've got representatives like Tom Tancredo who are willing to address issues head on and hold politicians accountable for enforcing the laws they've passed which also reflect the will of the majority of the American people. On the ultra fringe, you've got Virginia's Virgil Goode who's ultra-anti-illegal migrant, but also publically calling for the restriction of Muslim immigrants.
If you're calling for the fall of the West and appeasing all tyrants, and think Iran under the Mullahs is a free-speech human paradise with lovely fashions for women and the epitomy of an example of human rights, then you'll be welcome to speak at America's colleges and universities.
If you carry the view of ordinary Americans and state clearly obvious truths with regard to politics, international issues, etc., you'll be booed, threatened and attacked at America's universities.
You can even try to ride both sides and blow with the wind like Hillary Clinton and not meet the Ward Churchill criteria as a speaker and find yourself booed and shouted off the stage.
Free speech is valid for the far left only for the far left.

Tom Tancredo - I was insulted my his comment and you know what I should be as a resident of Miami. Maybe he is lacking tack or maybe he is an idiot - dont care either way.

I disagree with so many things posted on here on so many levels but I will leave this thought..."When in Rome do as the Romans do"...if you move to the US you adapt/assimulate to the place you move to (US), language, customs, etc....Not everyone that moves here(US) came from oppessed situations and there is nothing wrong with celebrating your nationality (its a pride thing) ...it is however obnoxious to try to come to the US and try to change it into where you came from so why that heck did you move here to begin with ??? Miami has changed a lot I do agree especially the last 10 years but you know what maybe ppl should take it to the polls and stop laying back and watch things happen.

Oh everyone knows Miami/South Beach is not Miami...its only a small part of town that anyone in their right mind know better to be careful. Houstons although a very nice place to eat in Miami Beach is not really in the safest area either its just on the ride side of the street, if you took the time to pan on the other side you would not want to stop......cmon guys get your facts straight. Just my 2 cents
