My daughter is attending University of Miami!
I am thrilled to bits that my daughter has chosen to attend University of Miami in Coral Gables!
Back story: 17 year old female, outgoing, tree hugger, model good looks, ambitious, smart but not super brainy, going into the Broadcasting program. Would like to double major/minor in Political Science.
Originally from WNY, then lived a little over a year in Richmond, VA (Midlothian), then several years in Scottsdale, Arizona and currently will be returning to Pittsburgh for a bit. We travel to Florida several times a year.
We are planning on purchasing a second house/condo down there.
Please give me all the pros and cons you can think of about the area, the type of student in general, and the reputation of the school.
Thanks!

Congratulations to her. It's a top university in a great city, best of luck to her! Coral Gables is a beautiful city all around and is very pleasing.

Congratulations! I will also be attending this fall! The school has a great reputation, have you done a campus visit yet? I spent around 4 hours on the campus and it seemed wonderful, many different kinds of people. I didn't get the feel of people being rude or conceited by any means, not any more than any other campus I've been to.

great reputation.....especially there MBA program. Coral Gables is VERY pricey. If you want to find a VERY nice house in a VERY nice area...look in Palmetto Bay....a couple of miles South of UM.
Good luck and congrats !

Actually Iam a foreigner and I have not got much money for this expense. Can you share with me some experience? Thank you very much!!!

UM is really good. And Coral Gables is a very good neighborhood.
And when you buy a house here, look in Coral Gables, Coconut Grove ( east of SW 32nd Ave ) and Pinecrest / Palmetto Bay.

Look for a Studio or 1br/1ba apartment/condominium in these neighborhoods:
- West Kendall / East Kendall: good neighborhoods, relatively safe and not expensive ( especially West Kendall, the rents are cheap there ). About $800 to rent a Studio or 1br.
- Dadeland and South Miami: good neighborhoods, safe and very close to UM. About $1,000 for a Studio or 1br.
- Coconut Grove ( East of SW 32nd Ave ): good neighborhood, relatively safe, and close to UM. About $1,000 for a Studio or 1 br.
- Cutler Bay ( East of US-1 ): fair neighborhood, OK safe, cheap to rent but not close to UM. About $800 for a Studio or 1br.
I think the best for you if you don't have much money is Kendall / West Kendall.
