I went to Miami a while ago. when I was a youngster.

Things I remember about it- That song "Welcome to Miami" was very popular at the time so.. my mother told the people at the airport we were moving to Miami just so that she could have someone tell her "Welcome to Miami.." we weren't moving to Miami though

I did not like going out at night... it was so surreal. Surreal how? Sort of like a modern tropical version of Dickens' London.. rich people in fancy clothes, out on the town doing waltzes and merengue, right next to huge crowds of homeless people and poor folks with cardboard shoes and cardboard signs.

I seem to also remember a lot of jewels and jewelry shops in Miami.. this is where I discovered my love of Emeralds!

Interracial marriages also seemed to be a common thing, surprising to me since I am from the central Midwest, but I didn't really care.

Away from the bad areas Miami was quite colorful and picturesque and pretty.. really like no other city.

Lots and lots and lots of Hispanics in the city in general, but lots and lots of gorgeous Hispanic women- who ALL seemed to have their hair dyed blonde! What's with that, Miamians? Really, come on girls- put away the peroxide. Natural brunettes are much more attractive.

I also discovered (and enjoyed) the very large Cuban presence there. I retain a lifelong love of Cuban music, Cuban sweets, Cuban cuisine and Cuban coffee. Cuban jazz and salsa and its musical traditions are particularly excellent. I heard Celia Cruz music for the first time there.. I don't think you can really find such a huge Cuban presence anywhere else!

So yes.. in conclusion Miami has its bad and good places, and I would like to visit again. In the meantime, I will crank up the Celia Cruz and continue my hunt for the perfect Cuban Sandwich Recipe!
love from
Mark

What is is with black haired women (and men) going blonde? Do they think we're not able to tell it's fake? Miami is sure a wierd place.
