I'm 19 years old, and am trying to find away to intelligently and supportably get away from home. I was thinking about going to a resort town to get a job, and thought that this forum might be a good place to ask.

Have you ever known anyone who successfully came to Miami/south Florida from a distant place, and successfully worked a job such as bartending, waiting, lifeguarding, etc? It seems to me that jobs such as this would probably be my best chance for making some money while getting away from home for a few seasons or a year. Miami is a good distance from where I really live, but I'm trying to get imput from locals about the feasibility of this kind of plan.

Bartending and waiting are either feast or famine in South Florida. They're great if you can get into a decent place and work during "season", which down here is only a couple months a yr. (Jan - April) Most places I've worked at the wait staff are lined up to try to get behind the bar as that's usually where most of the money is. Waiting tables would be an easier job to get, however in May when most of the tourists/snowbirds leave it isn't real great. Hours are cut back due to lack of business.

I have no info about life guarding. Good luck with your search however.

you can make very good money if you can be a bartender at any of the Miller's Ale House in Florida. They are busy every single night and explode during the weekends. Most are busy during the day too ! There are many to choose from. Good luck ! Welcome to Miller's Ale House Restaurants

Sure, just make sure to have something lined up before you come and check into the prices of everything. The cost of living in Miami will probably shock you and will quickly eat through any savings you may have. Miami's a fun place to live for a young person though and in that type of industry, you will surely meet new friends quickly.

If you want to intelligently get away from home, go away to college.

So many people want the same thing - and that's the problem. There are 100 bartenders for every slot. Trust me, these jobs are hard to come by.

I had years of waitressing experience and could not for the life of me get a waitressing job. I ended up getting a job I had no qualification for (insurance) because I had a friend who worked there.

Or join the military, which will help you with college. If you waste your time now, you'll be miserable later. You'll be eating macaroni and cheese everyday and posting how horrible Miami is, like some people.

Get your stuff together and take advantage of your youth and responsibility-free life. That's all of my Dr. Phill type lecture. Good luck.

i came from europe as an exchange student two years ago, I worked half a year as an intern and then got a job offer at the end of the internship which is great for my work-experience since I majored in logistics and Miami has one of the most important ports/airports in the world

i can't understand why some people just don't want to get away from home and would rather live with their parents forever etc. there's a world waiting to be explored
