Another point to ponder is how few people in Miami were born there. Seems like most leave to begin a better life somewhere else.

Yes Tpitner nailed it. And if he is pro-miami, imagine what someone whos not as pro miami would describe it as.. It simple works for some people and it doesnt for others. It used to work for me, but not any more. Your best bet is to come down and try it for a while with as little commitment as possible and see if it works for you.

Miami is a fast-paced big city with a diverse population of people from everywhere. I think sometimes people forget that and expect a resort town. So, I think if you have that in your mind and understand that, you're set.

I wasn't laughing at you Chick. I was thinking about when I lived in Las Vegas and San Diego. I used to say that "God-Fearing decent ppl wouldn't live here"... Check this out: I live in Tulsa Ok, which is the "Buckle of The Bible Belt", and we lead the nation statistically in child abuse, domestic violence, teenage pregnancies, women incarcerated in prison, etc,etc...Go figure!

I would really research, visit a few times, before you move here. I just took a trip to Atlanta a week ago, and you will giving up many more things and getting less if you move here. People in Atlanta drive fast, but they are curtious (sp????). The people in Miami could careless about the person driving next to them. The people in Atlanta were so friendly, they would say hello, look you in the eye and smile, something that rarely happens here. Also Atlanta has great weather compared to South Florida (unless you like 80F plus for 300 or more days a year). Atlanta has the second highest number of fortune 500 companies behind NYC. I heard that many people in Atlanta consider Marta as not going anyplace, well our Marta known as Metrorail (aka Metrofail) goes to even less places than Marta. So using public transit or riding a bike here isn't really an option. Portland Oregon has that but its gloomy there 9 month out of the year. Wages, will be higher than Atlanta, but that isn't saying much as we have low wages compared to other cities. South Florida does have entertainment and a nightlife that can not be denied, but I here good things about Midtown.
As far a raising a family in South Florida I would not raise children here unless one parent is a stay at home parent. And still I wouldn't, most (not all) my friends with children have left South Florida to raise their children in a better place. If that tells you anything. At 21, I understand the idea of wanting to move to a new place. But after some research on my end of Atlanta, I would consider South Florida a step down from Atlanta overall. Try looking at other cities. Quote:

Lived in Atlanta AND San Diego -- two cities that supposedely have a great "quality of life" and we just moved back to Miami (both DW and I born here too) to raise our kids. We WANT them to be raised in a place that has so much diversity and differing opinions and feel our OVERALL QOL is better in Miami. (Not EVERYONE and EVERYBODY hates it and moves away.)
If you read all the responses, they all seem at least partially right. Miami is Miami. It is moderately fast-paced with a moderate to a lot of social/cultural things to do which some people hate and others love. It has it's negatives of course, the biggest I can think of that most here can agree on is the cost of living vs wages, but everyone I know somehow manages to get by, of course with differing success rates (like ANYWHERE). Perfect example of why WE love Miami. Thursday my wife and I met for lunch at an AWESOME Spanish restaurant in Coral Gables. Great food, great service. A treat for lunch -- ~$46 for lunch for 2 with tip (w/ appetizer and coffeee) but really, really worth it. VERY well dressed crowd, taking tons of time over their lunch. Friday night we went to a friends house for a potluck Shabbat (we're Jewish). Kids had a blast, we had fun and ended up scheduling a once a month get-together for our little 'group.' We just moved back, so we're still doing the Home Depot thing on the weekend, but Saturday afternoon we went to Matheson Hammock to jump in the water in between chores and storms. Sunday night at Big Cheese. Flip-flops and shorts. Took my mother-in-law -- good pizza (not great), friendly crowd, always a wait and we ended up talking to a nice latin family next to us. VERY fair price, $37 for 5 (large 2 topping pizza, large eggplant sub, small basket of garlic rolls, pitcher of beer and 1 ice tea, w/o tip). This is OUR style, these are the things that WE like to do. The breadth of experiences we weren't getting out of San Diego (last place we lived). Some basic comparisons: The weather is warmer than Atlanta in the winter and Miami is slightly cooler in the "depths" of summer (those 94, still, grey and steamy days in Atlanta were killers). But you'll give up seasons anywhere in Florida and summer lasts a lot longer. Allergies aren't as bad in Miami (they KILLED me in Atlanta.) Traffic is about the same. I think Atlanta technically has worse traffic, but the drivers are worse here. That smile at your face, stab you in the back thing the South has going? Miami has none of that. People will tell you EXACTLY what they think (whether you ask or not). We always felt like we were on an island of "culture" in Atlanta (my apologies to all from the Deep South) and Miami has some of that vibe too. Miami is a place you need to occasionaly get away for the weekend from. The Keys are 2 hours south, Melbourne/Cocoa Beach 2 hours north but a plane is necessary to get out to ... pick it, Bahamas, PR, Costa Rica, NYC, back to Atlanta ... most places. Your degree seems to be perfect fit for Miami, but in this economy, hiring is on the slow side EVERYWHERE! Mass Transit? As others mentioned, it is NOT quite as good as Atlanta. But like Atlanta, if you're on a train or MetroMover line, it isn't too bad. One of the reasons we bought our house is that we could walk to the UM Metrorail station. But DW works in Blue Lagoon and I work from home, so we don't take it much (used to go to Heat games via train a lot). We have used the trolley in CGables a few times. If they extend a line down Ponce to the entrance to UM and then down to S Miami dwntwn, I'll be VERY happy and actually use it even more. Personally I rate my quality of life an 8 -- but I certainly understand if someone rates their's a 4. Like any big city the good has to out-weigh the bad. To some here it doesn't, to others it does. Miami ain't Mulberry. The style and opportunities in Miami have to be worth the negatives it to you. If they are, there is no city like it. Good luck.
