Not really, just buses, not recommended.

Since you've already spent the money on plane tickets, you might as well spend another $40 or so for a taxi and avoid a potential harrowing experience on a bus, especially if you have luggage. Even then, you should ask around for a reputable taxi company. But if you insist on a bus, you can look up route maps and schedules on the internet.

There are two train systems, the inter-county Tri-Rail and the Miami-Dade County Metrorail. Look them up as well on the internet, routes and schedules available. The most useful aspect is the Metrorail, the north-south segment that runs from downtown Miami to Dadeland. There is also the Metromover, free of charge, which serves the downtown/Brickell area.

Miami Beach is not part of any railway network, just buses.

With few exceptions, the US ruling classes design public transportation to be an excruciating failure, and they have their reasons for it, but the public welfare is not one of them.

Good luck!

The best way to get from the airport to downtown or South Beach is to catch a cab, you can take a bus but that is going to take you forever. Sadly Miami doesn't have a great public trans system. The corrupt commissioners let the cabbies win.

The bus from the airport to Sobe isn't that bad, actually. Maybe 30-40 min, unless during rush hour. 2$. To downtown, it is even easier. When you arrive, there will be sufficient signage to explain. Or, you can use maps.google.com and put in the two addys and click "public transit" and away you go.

Public transit in Miami is third world, but the airport link to SoBe/downtown is an exception.

well Miami did break ground on the MetroRail extension to the airport on May 1st. however that will be years away. Don't they have Super shuttle buses from the airport to downtown / South Beach anymore? If you want to talk third world public transport come to Orlando and i'm not talking about about shuttle buses to tourist areas either.

doggiebus the Metrorail extension will run from the Earlington Heights station which is the last station you see on SR 112 and it will head west along the the expressway all the way to near the Lejuene Road exit where it turns southbound east of Lejeune until it stops at the InterModal center directly across from the airport. From there you will take a people mover into the airport. The extension should be open by 2012.
