Apparently that building was undergoing roof repair so more about quality of repair versus "condo nazis".

This is a developing story, but no chance roofing work caused this! That is like the Wile E Coyote cartoons when a drop of bird poop lands on something and then a catastrophe occurs.

It will likely cause a ripple effect in the condo insurance/inspections in that area though. I'll bet the state forces emergency inspections on every one of them then the insurance companies will jack up the rates in case their insured building collapses too. Sadly people lost their lives just because they were sleeping in the wrong building that night.

Reminds me of the Miami bridge collapse, same thing........wrong day, wrong street for 1/2 dozen people.

Sink hole?
Ever notice you get better stories and pics from Daily Mail than the local papers?

Every resident in a 30-40+ year old condo on the Beach is now going to be asking their board a lot about concrete and sea air corrosion. Also, if you ever considered staying in an old condo on the Beach in a major hurricane with a shaky history of maintenance. Think again. This is very likely the damage profile you'll see on the Beach in a direct hit cat 4/5 with the poorly maintained older buildings ocean side pancaking .

This is honestly crazy... I definitely know older buildings in Miami were made with cheap materials and often without rebar. Of course, Miami and also Florida at large has a huge infrastructure problem overall... regardless, this is so scary and heartbreaking.

The building is going to have to be razed to the ground even the part that didn't collapse is structurally compromised. The owners should make out OK unless the insurers fight the claim saying the board was negligent in maintenance. The owners then might have to sue the insurers, and possibly any maintenance company that did work on the property. The land is incredibly valuable. They'll probably just sell the land to a luxury developer.

But yeah this is definitely going to cause insurance problems for older high rise buildings all over Florida! Lots more inspections and expensive restoration work. You might even see a lot of associations dissolve and sell their land because the cost of restoration and insurance is too high.
