I was born and raised in Miami, and now live in NJ. I miss it very much. But I am heading back to FL soon, after more than 20 years north, and regrettably won't be living in Miami, but in the northern Gulf area.

The cost of living and the congestion is the main thing. I can live so much better in the Panhandle gulf region, and not be quite so crowded. And the beach is closer, just across the highway.

It's kind of strange, but in many ways the area around Pensacola/navarre/ft walton reminds me of what Perrine/Cutler Ridge/HOmestead was 30 years ago.

Miami is not for everybody, and always was like that - I can remember neighbors who would move in from the north and then realize that they did not really like it.

But if I had the chance to move back and live reasonably well, I would take it. It's a wonderful, unique place - and yes, sadly, it is a city that wasn't planned too well for its own success and growth. But I love it anyway.

Miami is NOT as bad as people it make it seem here. Absurd. Even the Miami ghettos are not nearly as bad either not even little Haiti. Try living in Newark NJ, or some of the ghettos in LA. Now those are some real ghettos. From personal experience actually having lived or visited all these places, Miami is leave it to beaver literally, one of my cousins visited here and when i took him to places like little Havana and little Haiti he just laughed at me when i told him that these were some of the "bad" areas of Miami I remember my cousins having to walk me to school with a gun back in Newark. In some parts of LA just wearing the wrong colors no matter what race you are will get you shot. For all the Miami bashers calling it a third world country. Have ever of you even visited a third world country? I'm half Latin and i have. Trust me its not. You know what a third world country really is. It's little kids having to go sell candy on the streets barefoot. It means never knowing if you're going to have enough money to eat. For god sake being poor in Miami means having a car, cable TV, a wifi connection, and an ever growing obesity problem. Are Miami people rude. Hell yes we are and i say it proudly. New yorkers are just as rude and everybody seems to accept them. That is why some people call us the new York of the south other than the ever increasing skyline. Were rude and I love it. Miamians have attitude deal with it. Get over. I love cutting people have and flicking the finger when they cut me off. We are a rude arrogant but Hot looking people lol, but people will be nice to you if your nice to them. NOT ever body but the vast majority will. We are not a fake people. We say it like it is. If you want to be lied to go somewhere else. And thats a fact..Thats what happens when you live in a densely populated place like Miami. Well except if you live in San Fransisco lol. Miami is a great city. Sure we had our wild frontier days in the 80s, but every great city goes through that, and yes Miami is great. Am proud to be a miamian. Were not a bunch of illiterate beaners. You know the people that were actually born or raised here do speak English way better than Spanish. They do consider themselves Americans. Miami is growing. Most people around the world can only identify a few places in the US. Miami being one of them

Miami also has many problems. We have a nasty transportation system. The metro rail is not nearly long enough as it should be for our population. Some of our politicians are corrupt, but hey at least they admit it. And really an honest politician is an oxy moron. No body ever goes to a marlins game. We have too many things to do. Our schools are way too overcrowded, but they are building new schools. Immigrants also dint make learning English a priority. Which they should i think it brings a certain unity to a multicultural society. I will be the first to say this. Some of are people need to learn some damn English, but for the most part people here are bilingual. I saw this on a news channel the other day. Most second generation Hispanics actually assimilate faster than any other race beating the closes by 7 percent. Most forget Spanish and only talk English. Trust me my Spanish needs work.

REALLY READ THIS ONE. I guess not everyone hates Miami. Our population is expected to double by 2060. And the same for Florida. Florida Planning Process

Here read this were not as poor as people think we are. We can't all ride donkeys to work and send are kids to the streets to sell candy instead of school. Study: Inner-city economies are undervalued - 04/26/2007 - MiamiHerald.com

This is a San Francisco article. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...type=printable (broken link)

Listen people Miami is a test. Most cities will be a minority majority in 50 years. So you better hope it works. All this bashing doesn't help. If it didn't work before, well too bad it's starting to work NOW. by 2012 we will have a biggest skyline after NY and Chicago. People love it here. the world loves it here. Sometimes it feels like if the world loves us more than our fellow Americans. Hopefully that changes. Miami is here to stay and will only get better.

Default You have been warned many times

Attention:

Absolutely do NOT move to Miami. Under any circumstances. Miami ruined my marriage and turned me into an alcoholic and, no, I'm not lying or embellishing. Living in that city will turn an ordinary, happy person into a bitter, depressed, stressed out, shell of a human being.

This has nothing to do with being "minority majority" or "culturally diverse" or any other PC buzzwords. I grew up and spent the first 25 years of my life in New Mexico, heralded by the diversity police as another Utopia of "minority majority" and was happy as a clam. Miami is nothing, NOTHING like that. The difference is that NM is all about coexistence, cooperation and tolerance. Miami is about overpopulation, 3rd world standards, congestion and total, utter lack of value. I don't understand how 3rd world standard has become synonymous with "minority majority" (I know if I were minority, I'd be pretty insulted by allusions to minorities automatically being 3rd world), but in Miami that's how it is.

It's ugly, overcrowded, expensive and dangerous. The weather sucks, the people are idiots (with few exceptions), the traffic is suicidal, nature has been completely destroyed by the human virus and you are guaranteed to have something ripped off in the first year, I don't know anyone who hasn't. This place is as close to hell as I ever want to come. Do not move here. You have been warned.

If you can afford Pinecrest, Aventura, the Gables and private schooling I say go for it.

I agree.....if you have kids it isnt a good choice...you could use that money to live in a safer enviroment.......your kids will see fights and know other kids that have drugs and use drugs as they get into middle school and highschool.....there is a street mentality that your kids will become a part of in Miami-Dade schools.....I went to American Highschool which is considered out in the suburbs and its not considered bad by Miami-Dade standards but there were gangs and there were lots of fights and lots of kids skipping school there.....i was guilty of all of those things while going to school there......i moved from a small town in North Florida called Lake City after my 4th grade year and I was an "A" and "B" student....then i got into the Miami-Dade school system and as i got older and into 8th and 9th grade...my grades slipped to C's, D's, and some F's with an occasional B here and there.....when i got to highschool i was averaging low C's to D's with some "f"'s........i started skipping classes because i would see fights everyday and i got into a couple and had some black dudes try to jump me in the hallway....i saw a kid get beat up for stepping on another kids shoelaces in the hall way between classes......and this stuff happened all the time.......Don't bring your kids to Miami and ruin thier chances at a scholarship.....Good Luck

Don't listen to this ...PLEASE....he probably never walked around a "bad area" in Miami....the only reason northerners like your cousin laugh and think its nice in the ghetto is because they are too oblivious to notice things around them....Miami ghetto doesnt look like New Jersey Ghetto.....there are palm trees which throws people off if they come from up north.....both areas (Miami and NJ) have terrible areas with terrible crime....you have to be oblivious or have never actually lived in the ghetto in Miami ....because the crime is comparable in both areas

Just a question for you......most northerners come south and say that the ghettos here are laughable......are they just trying to do that because they are pridefull of where they are from or is it true that Miami couldnt compare to NJ when it comes to bad areas?

I personally believe there are terrible problems in both places in the bad areas.....its just two different looking areas......i say that because ive lived in 5 states all together although i was born and raised in Miami

I have never seen so many ignorant uneducated hostile people in my life and thats coming from a metro area of 10 million people to Miami area which is much smaller than L.A. MY ADVICE TO YOU IS TO TRAVEL HERE ON THE WEEKEND TO ENJOY THE NIGHT LIFE AND TO NOT BECOME A PART OF THIS SO UNSOPHISTACATED THIRD WORLD SOCIETY.
i will reply to this in a little more civilized manner. Miami is not the best place to be. no where have i seen people drive worse in the US than here, they're nuts! people, Christ almighty, every day i turn on the radio "the palmetto is backed up today due to an automobile accident and air rescue ad to come blah blah blah" and no surprise, people only care about where they have to go, and have complete disregard for the safety of those around them. half of the people i have met can;t speak English fluently, why if INS or ICE came here, they'd have a massive payoff of deporting illegal aliens. and never have i seen such racist people. i am white, and most of the population is Hispanic, and they refer to me as "white boy" or "Cracker", and jesus, the way they dress, I've never seen someones name shaved into the back of their head before. and lemme tell ya, it gets hot and humid. and don't get me started with the mosquitoes, simply put, if you are Hispanic, this is a homeland for you, very liberal towards non-English speaking Hispanics, if you are Hispanic and look it, you are going to have a fabulous time, i unfortunately live here. if you are white, expect to be treated as a foreigner, i personally think Miami's credo should be "Miami, as close to the US as you can get".
