I remember reading a Dave Barry column years ago in the now non-existent Tropic section of the Miami Herald (at least I think he was the one who wrote this) that mentioned that fact that when you tip the United States, all the scum trickles down to South Florida. Perhaps this is why - a good old fashioned cleansing just might be in order!

After all, it was greedy people who decided to drain the swamps and occupy areas that are really meant to be swampy and uninhabitable to begin with, so maybe nature will take back what is rightfully hers one day...who knows?

Thanks doggiebus, just trying to offer some realistic perspectives.

That's not called "nice" it's called FAKE!!!!!!
Not to insult you, but that's the East perception of the West...
I'd HONESTLY rather have someone tell me they feel like crap than lie & tell me how everything is "greeeeaaaat" - EXACT quote from people I met from LaLa land...
The stereotype of plastic, air-headed people is REAL!!!
You just can't see it cause you're IN it...So you THINK it's "nice"...
Uh uh...It's hollywood...
"...you don't just "put on a happy face"!!! ". maybe in some places and among some types, they owe it to themselves and to society to not polute the next person's space with expressions about your bad day and about your aches and pains. therefore you smile and keep your bad day to yourself. that way we don't polute the environment with bad vibes and negative energy. instead of going postal paste a smile on your face and move on. nobody cares if the smile is real. it's a smile of politeness and goodwill towards another. among other things it tells me that you can maybe be trusted to stand withen three feet of me. and anyway i dont need to see your bad day hanging out and i don't even know you that well. give me the paste on smile when you come into my space.

i try to do that in miami beach. in south dade and around MIA however a smile on your face will make yourself a target for people to take advantage of you. especially at work. i had to learn the hard way and its part of what made me so bitter about this place.

note that i said "in some places and among some types". I am sure it works in some parts of miami and not in others.

Some of it I am convinced is exaggerated, some of it I completely believe and some of it I feel is the same in many other places around the country. I am not looking for a perfect place - I don't believe one exists. There is no denying that housing, the cost of homeowners insurance and taxes have become unmanageable for most of us (average working folks). I also understand that there is a large, hispanic, spanish-speaking population. However, I've always noticed while vacationing there that I hear a wide variety of accents, many spanish, some European, some sound to be Haitian and some I can't place and I actually find that very interesting. I actually find it quite refreshing that there is a great mix of lots of different people from lots of different places. Traffic, I hate, but it's not exclusive to Florida. We have absolutely awful traffic up here in Jersey and I'm sure it's like that in most large cities. Without addressing all of the negative information I've seen regarding South Florida, my question is this...

If you are looking to rent, thus eliminating the problem of housing costs AND if you don't particularly mind the large population of "non-white" Americans - for lack of a better term - whether Spanish or other nationalities/ethnicities/origin, AND if you feel you will adapt to how oppressive the summers in a tropical climate can be is it still the opinion of most of you that South Florida is a terrible place to live? If so, please give examples of why that is (except if it's for the same reasons listed here)
sorry to say rude are those who give out so much negativity on miami i lived there 40 years i,ve been to many states and you find rude there too if people dont like miami please keep out we love our crazy wonderful miami

COULDNT HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF. OF COURSE, I MUST SAY, IN SOME WAYS I DO MISS MY HOMETOWN, BUT AS FAR AS GROWING OLDER AND PLANNING ON HAVING CHILDREN OF MY OWN, I THINK I RATHER RAISE MY CHILDRENS IN THOSE WORSE CITIES IN OTHER COUNTRIES THAN HAVE MY CHILD RAISED IN MIAMI.
