I am also a seashell collector. I have found a few tiny but beautiful shells on Miami Beach. I'm also interested in an answer to this question!

The west coast is your best bet. Sanibel/Captiva Island is probably the best place. I have heard (not been myself) Marco Island is probably good. Here is the reason why you will not find many shells on the east coast. Our sand on Miami Beach and probably all the way up to Ft. Lauderdale for that matter is shipped in from the Bahamas I believe (man made beaches sort of speak). So every so often the county hauls in the sand and it is spread out on the beaches. We don't have the amount of shells in the water of our shores to be broken up by currents that then create the sand. And so we don't get natural beaches like the west coast of the state and we don't get the shells like the west coast of the state. So you will need to go to the west coast if you want to go shelling.

My guess would be Key Biscayne or Virginia Beach, as they're pretty much untouched nature preserves. Unlike Miami Beach which is cleaned daily.

This map should help http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/library/tm_for_web.pdf (broken link) again if you are looking for shells you will not find them like you will in Sanibel. All the way at the end of Key Biscayne is a lighthouse you might also enjoy.

If you look at the this link, the image of the people on the beach, they are standing on all shells, and the entire island is like that.Sanibel Island Things to Do :: Shelling :: Sanibel Island Captiva Island Florida

Yes, it's in Miami, just north of Key Biscayne by Miami Seaquarium and MAST.

I've seen nice seashells on the West coast (Naples) I haven't seen that many on the South East.
