We are a white family and as I mentioned before have 4 kids so schools are important as well.
I was just wondering all of your thoughts. The drive looks to be 40 mins which I am sure could be adjusted with traffic and etc.
It is the most important that we are in a safe area with great schools and is in our price range.
Any thoughts???
Thanks so much!

I worked in Miami Gardens for a few years about 7 years ago. I commuted from CGables and it was a realtively easy 25-45 minute commute. You could really live tons of places, it's pretty central.
I would work backwards from the high school you want. I assume public? Start at GreatSchools.net -- you can be anywhere from Weston to Hollywood to more obviously Aventura or Miami Lakes.
Since the turnpike is RIGHT THERE, you can also extend a bit north to the Coral Springs area, but then you start to get into a doable, but longer commute.
I would caution 1 thing RE the school -- don't just assume b/c a school has high average SAT/FCAT scores it is the best choice for your kid(s). Lots of ok but kind of mundane schools are filled with middle-class, "slightly above average" kids and there isn't a poorer population to drag down the average score. You really need to try and get a feel for everything a school has to offer and how your kids will fit in and hopefully thrive, not just be "another" kid.
Good luck.

Moving to Miami Area
Hola to all!

Currently residing in Costa Rica for the past 2 years and would like a change in scenery. Am a world-wide traveler for the past decade or so.
Am retired, but work in the import/export business. Would like infor on affordable housing in the Miami area. Am interested in a clean, safe environment. I speak English, Spanish, German, and Polish. Am in a fixed income and would like a 55+ community in the Miami area. Love cultural diversity and people. Sept/Oct is my timetable and as far as transportation, am not enthusiastic about automobiles. Love the bus system and have plans to purchase a bike for transportation purposes around the city. Would like recommendations on safe biking and areas to stay away from!
Pura Vida de todos!!!

If you like biking, try Hollywood Florida. They have GREAT beach with a bike path along the beach and beachfront condos.. Far superior to Miami's beach, and a bit safer, not to mention So Beach is more towards the young party scene and "alternative lifestyle".
There are also "Communities" in Boca and Broward. If you are still in the imp/exp biz, Miami is probably better, but more competition. However, if you are on a fixed income, Dade County will tax all your money away (unles you rent). BEWARE OF HOME OWNER ASSOCIATIONS!!

Are you sure you want to swap Costa Rica for Miami? I know that Costa Rica is kind of boring after a certain time, but beats the hell out of Miami.
Public Transportation in Miami is a disaster, bikes are not a good idea to move around, even less if you're over 55. Many people without driving license that don't stop at lights.
Communities for over +55 are extremely depressing and are located in Holywood or WPB (I'm not certain here). But you don't want to live there...You are talking here about ghetos inhabited by dying people.
As to "multiculturalism", there's no multiculturalism there. If you are not high middle class or rich, you will find yourself among uncouth indigenas with no education whatsoever, or resented people that hate the city and themselves. They have been leaving town during the last 40 years.
Not like Costa Rica at all.
