They had/have them in Broward too. I went to high school in Davie, not only would Cubans assimilate to that culture, so did the Italian kids from NY...pretty bizarre phenomenon that I have not seen outside of South Florida. So in essence, a place doesn't have to be all "Anglo American" to be old school. The same can go for the suburban white-picket fence culture, like in Miami Springs where various Hispanics replaced the old "Anglo" population but the lifestyle remained intact. Heck, you can even see the stepford thing (see Weston, heh). There is an assimilation process going on for sure, although it's (obviously) slow and it's not occurring everywhere.

Yes , there may be more to do now and nice albeit near empty high rise buildings on Biscyane Blvd , in Miami Beach and on Brickell ... but cost of living was much more affordable , crime was lower , I do not care what you say ... it is out of control here .

You still had larger populations of Anglos in Miami Lakes , Miami Springs , Coral Gables , Aventura , Pine Crest ... that means you had a greater diversity of ethnicities , not just a Latin monoculture . You had what I thought was a much better class of Hispanics ... I went to FIU and then UM with many of them ... highly educated wonderful people including second and third generation Cuban Americans who were very "Americanized " ... awesome people from Venezuela , Colombia , Argentina and tons of students from the North East who are no longer coming here to study as much as before ... you did not have the same ghetto factor that you do now .. that is really out of control . South Beach was a trendy , chic European style city known as the modeling capital of the world ... it was very gay , but at least those guys were cool , and kept the area artsy and clean .. since the mass error that was Memorial Day Hip Hop weekend South Beach has taken a dive and in many cases become a hang out for gangsta and ghetto wannabees ... I beg to differ with you Miami maybe has become more pleasing to the eye , but its quality of life and quality of people has headed "south" IMO .

Crime is actually 35% lower than it was 10 years ago in Dade. As far as I can remember South Beach has been a haven for rap stars so thats nothing new. And last I checked South Beach is still a beautiful trendy, european hot spot, stacked with models and still pretty gay.
I guess its just theres less "anglos", but most of the cities you mentioned are still non-hispanic majority and there really isn't a shortage of us, and anglos don't really add to more diversity of ethnicities, if you haven't read theres more diversified ethnicities now than before.

Care to prove? I'm just going to leave it at there is no way the crime was lower any time before 2000. Miami and Miami-Dade County were consistently number one in all of those "most dangerous" lists through the 80s and 90s. That's not the case anymore, and despite perception, crime has gone down from the 80s and 90s in the US. Crime is still very high but not any higher than it was. Miami is what it is and was what it was since about 1980, post Mariel. The same goes for the culture as well. I don't think the quality of life is drastically different, nor do I think the composition of the neighborhoods has really changed since the late 80s. I have family down here rooted here since the 50s, so I do get my fair share of history lessons.

Unhappy Old Skool.........

I am a Cuban American not residing in Miami right now. I live in FL close to Al. I was shocked to read all this back and forth of who lives where and close to the Jews or the Cubans etc. I decided to read the Miami Forum because I was feeling a little nostalgic, maybe I shouldn't of.
In my opinion, the person that wants "old skool" feel probably should not move to Miami. I just got back from TN and most of the areas that I visited there are "old skool" feel. For that same reason that area doesn't offer many other things that Miami offers. Miami is the Melting Pot everyone wants!

I think everyone in Miami should take a breather and enjoy the beauty Miami has to offer. I miss driving down Miracle Mile and driving to the Beach! I don't think any area is perfect. As a Cuban, I hear all this talk and it sounds like someone wants to fumigate us, we are not insects. I have been in the US for 46 years and love this country. Growing up I also lived in NJ, loved it! I love NY and you won't hear me talking about Yankees,it's all good. That is what makes NY so great. I think the people and what they bring make the difference! I left Miami seven years ago and had no clue people felt this way............wow!
I am sorry but I could not continue reading without saying something.
I'll leave now with a few lines: May your troubles be less, your blessings more & may nothing but happiness, come through your door!

Nothing will convince me that crime is 35% lower sorry , nor that there are not more low lifes in South Beach ( a place I used to love ) people are meaner , ruder , the area is more congested . I call it like I see it .. yes Miami Dade County has some beautiful areas in fact I defend the area constantly on this forum .. but if quality of life has not deteriorated than why have so many natives both Hispanic and non Hispanic moved away ... don't give me a fluff answer the reality is that the quality of the people has gone down hill .... man go to the "Calle Ocho " festival and then talk to me .. talk about "trash " ... I went with several Hispanic friends and they were actually ashamed to be there ... called it a "chonga " and "chusma " festival and Calle Ocho is a snap shot of what has happened to Miami .

My friend if you have been here 46 years then you are part of the original Cuban immigrants from the 1960's and 1970's who were honest , educated , hard working people ... not what is coming over now from your beautiful country .. which may as well be a different species !!!

May God bless you as well and stay safe !!!

The "old" miami still exists mixed with the new, garbage Miami. The people with the right attitude who can afford it, or the old timers who were not pushed out still remain. If the real estate bubble finally bursts the good people will hold on. If not we will all be gone in a decade or so.

I didnt live here 10 years ago but statistics dont lie so I guess you can deny them atleast. And using Calle Ocho as a representation of a community is laughable. Any festival like those brings those types of people, like the puerto rican parade or St. Patty's anywhere in the country.

Ok then do not use "Calle Ocho " , spend an afternoon in Hialeah at the Westland Mall or Dolphin Mall in SW Miami .. when you have over a million people mostly local at the Calle Ocho festival it is a fair representation of the demographics of the city ... sorry . Many good people have immigrated here in the last ten years along with many , many low lifes .. it is reality take it or leave it . I get the vast majority of this input using my own eyes and from my Hispanic friends of which I have many ... the words "Chusma " and "Chonga" are used by my Hispanic friends to describe many of the people that have come here in the last few years and it is the sad truth .
