Howzit Kobus, I am also thinking about going to Miami. Got a couple mates living in Fort Lauderdale, they are loving it. Hot and humid year round, safe, good lifestyle. They spend most of their weekends fishing, camping, really outdoors. You dont get much leave a year is the only downside for them andobviously being away from family. They find the americans very friendly and cool as well, although I think it is hard to make friends as the cultures are quite different.
They haven't looked back though . I am definitely thinking about it cause my wife is a US citizen, but not sure what I would do there as I would have to retrain.

I'm part Zimbabwean(Rhodesian)-American, been to the South Africa and all that visiting family (expatriates who fled Zimbabwe in the early 2000's cause of Mugabe). my mother lives in west palm beach, florida. i live in chicago myself and after doing several rounds to south florida am looking to move miami. can't say i've met a single south african or zimbabwean down here, but sounds like they're around from the thread (which really surprised me). I guess it would make sense, the weather is similiar, and alot of areas do resemble the Carribean (which resemble's Africa). Anybody used to warm weather would fit perfectly in south florida.

u should, i would like to connect with other southern africans in the states. u see all these other communities here in chicago for instance, like polish, irish, german, black, mexican, puerto rican, etc. but u never see any southern african communities here or in the states, period. they (we) don't like to hang on to their culture it seems (or they just blend back in with the english culture instead). I feel as if I'm the only Zimbabwean American (or south african) in the entire united states. It sucks kinda, havin no one else to relate to about your family struggles and why they came to the states, like the Cubans for instance.

Hello SoutAfrica75 - Are you still reading these bulletins?
I'm a Californian that spent over four years resident in Durban, three blocks from the Greyville Track. But that was when they still called the province Natal.
There is quite a settlement of South Africans here too. I think they prefer the dryer climate, but still have the terrain much like the southern Natal and Transkei.
And a few miles east of this area would make those from the Big Karoo or the Little Karoo feel right at home.

My dermatologist in Islamorada is from Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) as well. He came to the US for medical school and has lived in South Florida ever since.

I know there's a place close to Commercial Blvd & N Federal Hwy "Meal in a Pie". It's like a bakery & mini-market. They have a huge South African flag flying outside so it's hard to miss it. They also sell SA products(I'm not SA but I like some of their products) I also saw some Magazines there written in Afrikaans.
