I don't know what the crime statistics are for the various neighborhoods, but the probability of being victimized has nothing to do with one person's experience, and everything to do with the stats.
It depends what you value, though. If I though personal safety was super important, I'd live in a small town in Wyoming, rather than anywhere in Miami. But here I am.

And all you people please stop with all this stuff such as "opalocka isnt part of miami, its a city itslef" or "thats part of dade county not miami". Its all the same!!!!!! if you live anywhere in Dade then you could consider yourslef living in miami! Hell, south beach isnt part of the city itself but thats what attracts most people to it! Living in hileah, aventura, opalocka, homestead, liberty city, overtown and the rest of them, is all MIAMI!!!!

Basically South Miami is super Spanish, & North West is pretty ghetto as is the outskirts of downtown...
The Northeast is cool.
We have ALOT of very nice areas!!! (Um, yeah, some are a bit on the expensive side! )

I don't agree that it has much to do with the stats as they're reported either. That would only be true if it was something like a lottery where every person gets one number that has an equal chance of being picked. In truth, not everyone is equally at risk of being a crime victim. It depends on your behavior, who you associate with, who you happen to run into, etc. The stats do not say anything about that.

All else being equal, like your behavior, who you associate with, who you happen to run into, etc., you are more likely to be a crime victim in places where the crime rate is higher. If you leave your car unlocked in a town Wyoming, chances are that you will never have a problem. If you leave your car unlocked in Miami, chances are that you will be cleaned out.
If you never go out of your house, you are probably pretty safe in either place, plus or minus the occasional home invasion in Miami.

My father's car was stolen off 13th Street, between West Ave. and Alton Rd. on Miami Beach (it was found by a Miami cop patrolling a rough part of Miami). Several years before that, the gate on the building's garage was broken, so someone came in and stole the airbags. In both cases the car was locked. When we lived in southwest Miami, with a previous car, someone stole the battery. Allstate has been taking it on the chin.
An insurance guy told me that the 33139 zip code had the highest (or close) car insurance rates in the country. When I moved from New Hampshire, for roughly the same coverage (a lot), my rates doubled.
Never had a home break-in though, even after all these years.

The point is exactly that those things are NOT equal. Most crime victims are not "random" people.

I just recently graduated from college and I am from a small town in North Carolina so you can understand why I am nervous. I haven’t heard anything nice about Miami and my parents are acting like I am going to Iraq and teaching me how to shoot a gun for my safety. I am optimistic that there has to be good people down there, but if you could direct me to some nice neighborhood I would greatly appreciate it.

Most white, non-Hispanic transplants settle in Broward - it's more like America up there. The next best thing would be the Miami Lakes area, which is in the extreme NW corner of Dade. The Aventura area is nice, if you like condos everywhere.
The rest of Dade is pretty much like living in a foreign country without leaving the borders of the US. I've lived in Dade all my life, so I've adjusted. Those coming from other areas often experience severe culture shock.
