NEED HELP ASAP. Might be relocating to Miami, FL in 2 wks Due to a job offer there. this will be my 2nd time there.
I really need help on where to live in Miami that is safe for a single person. I am looking to be in a safe environment that the rent price can range from $850 to $950 on 1BR.
I preferred, a nice, calm, friendly, diverse neighborhood. Not too crowed or nosie. Not too much of a party person. (more on relax and feel comfortable on the weekend typer)
I will be working directly in Miami, the area code is 33169. I am willing to travel 30 minutes from where I would be living to work. I want to avoid traffic too if possible!!!
Please can anyone suggest which area or other smaller city that I should look for apartment or townhouses? I would appreciate if I got as much suggestions and advices.
One last requests. Please drop me anything about what's the PROs and CONs of Miami life? I want to hear it all.
Look into Hollywood, but chiefly east of US1. Your zip code has you before the golden glades traffic mess, so your commute would only be around 10-15 minutes on 95.
Why are there so many people with "hot job offers" who can only afford low income rental apartments asking about Miami? $850 a month will get you a crappy efficiency with old windows and a 20 year old air conditioner on Miami Beach. It might get you a 'decent' 1br in Miami proper, buy you WILL be in a shady area...crime, no English speakers, poor shopping options (Valsan, Sedanos, "Presidente Supermarket") or no stores at all...
If the pay for these jobs prohibits transfer applicants from living in a decent area, shouldn't it also prevent companies here from being able to attract qualified personnel from outside Miami? If the pay of these jobs is so low, why would anyone want to take them, and why can't these companies market these jobs to local Miamians if they can't pay enough for their employees to live in a nice area?

They didn't say "hot job offer" but that's a good question.

They said $850-950. As HeyDade pointed out, $900 will get you perfectly respectable places. Check out Craigslist.

This one for $845 is VERY close to where we started out for $750 in CGables 12 years ago (north of Alhambra, between Le Jeune & Ponce.)

Who says they are so low?
Rent @ $900 + $200 utilites + 400 car payment/insurance = $18,000/year
Add another AT LEAST $5,200/year for food/entertainement (@ 100/week)
That's all lowballed too. Add little things like cloths, car repair, gas, flying home to see Mom & Dad, maybe some college debt, TAXES... I'd bet their salary is AT LEAST ~$35k. When I was 25, $35k wasn't too bad.
And in this economy, having a job is a VERY good thing.

That's the million dollar question. Are these companies looking for qualified people in SoFla and not finding them? Seems unlikely at the lower end of pay scales, BUT the unemployment rate in SoFla isn't that bad (so maybe?).
Maybe the notorious "low paying" employees of SoFla are finally meeting an employment force that won't work for peanuts anymore and they need to recruit outside the area?
When we were looking for jobs to relocate BACK to Miami last year, jobs at the middle-upper ends seemed to pay about what they did in SoCal, but I also know that clients of mine complain about hiring qualified people "that care" but certainly don't want to pay more than $45k. It's sort of a catch-22.
Maybe outside hires allow them to get around that?
MOST of us went through this, first decent job, lower pay than you want but maybe some opportunity to grow or move on.
I wish you luck Chuchu.

Hollywood? Don't go to Hollywood that is full of gangster people! It seems like your zip code is by the North Miami area. Aventura is a great area which has a lot of older rich people and some apartments can be affordable. I live in Miami Lakes and it's great here. Pembroke Pines and Miramar are also nearby and they are not bad areas but depends were! Pembroke Pines and Miramar is not considered Miami is Broward County but is nearby. You should look for a realtor for help and that person will help you more. Good Luck! Also Kendall is not a bad area but not too close and you said you don't mind driving 30 minutes from work but there is a lot of traffic so you should choose a nearby location.

I agree they pay less here than most other cities for college degrees

You mean low paying employers...
Wouldn't the domestic job market here adjust itself before anything like that could happen? I think a lot of companies large and small who don't have anything to do with Latin America need middle managers who are English fluent and can comply with corporate directives/standards from out of state. There might not be enough interest in that field in Miami. Everybody with white collar savvy in Miami wants to be a self employed insurance scammer or mortgage broker especiale and drive around Miami with their phone number plastered on the side of their car. Or, they simply won't work for somebody else who doesn't come from within their native culture/language etc.
