Default fishing in miami canals

You miamians are so lucky. Are you allowed to fish in those canals around miami? Is a license required? What do you catch?

Yes you can fish from the canals no permit required, but I wouldn't eat anything you catch from the canals. As people dump things in these canals, and then the fish get contaminated with what ever people dump into the canals. The thought of someone eating something out of the canals is disgusting.

Default thanks

No, I wouldn't eat them. I fish for recreation. Do you see many people fishing there?

Ive seen people occasionaly fishing in them. But agree you should just do it for rec, eating out of those canals doesnt seem real smart. Alot of homes also have lakes in the back and people do the same.

Depends on the canals. The one's closed off from the ocean are mostly freshwater. There you'd look for bass, largemouth, smallmouth and peacocks. I agree I wouldn't eat anything from those waters.
One the ocean access canals, you'd find snook, tarpon, snapper and others. I would and have eaten snapper from the ocean access canals -- if they have tides, they tend to be fairly clean.

You don't need a saltwater license to fish from land, but you do need to watch out for size requirements.

I fish them occasionally and catch largemouth bass or peacock bass. I've also seen multiple decomposed bodies pulled out of them, so I wouldn't eat anything that comes out of a canal. People also dump cars, and everything else in there.

Moderator cut: edit: removed personal comment Why would you ever fish out of those ugly, green canals? Go out to the beautiful blue Atlantic and land a sailfish or a big fat grouper. I'm sure there are some skiffs that are very affordable that could get you and your family out into the blue...
