Don't know how you assume I don't know this. North of the river Downtown is still slugging behind, but you really can't deny the population boost and retail openings, all Im saying is Downtown Miami is no different than most city centers that have been in decay for the last couple decades.

Yea, but Miami has so many advantages that other cities with empty store fronts or ugly/crime ridden urban cores could only dream of... (Money/ year round warm weather, largest cruise ship port in the world 1 mile away/ South beach/ Brickell) and yet it still can't clean up the 'trash'...

Exactly. I wouldn't put it in the Detroit/Baltimore category but it defintely should be a lot better than what it is.

I think you're spot on. IF you have to have a city, then get on with it and make it a real city. Is NYC, London or Madrid "overbuilt?"

The county can do a much better job planning, but that last "master plan" they were working on last year (forgot the name) was a step in the right direction imho.

Switching gears, does anyone have an update on the Crosswinds redevelopment project (more building lol) that was supposed to happen in Overtown? Last I heard the city of Miami was still in a legal dispute and coverage of the project pretty much halted after that?

You guys definitely get it. For a major metropolitan city, Miami's urban core is certainly underbuilt in terms of residentail units. The condo boom has added units, but not in the most constructive way, and arguably far too late in the game. The infrastructure is not in place to accommodate a dense urban core in Miami.

The metro area is overbuilt in terms of suburban sprawl. Most of metro Miami is technically suburbs. Despite the fact that tallrick thinks that all the new developments have terribly small lots, the housing density is generally low in metro Miami considering how much land it takes up.

For a metro with natural land barriers, residential housing should have been going "up" not "out" for many years now. Instead it went out, and it is putting pressure on the Everglades and existing infrastructure, which was not really well-planned in relation to the development that was happening. The outward sprawl has forced developers to cram more units onto smaller parcels as the land runs out, but this is happeneing on the outer fringes of the metro area (out in the "country") instead of in the core where it should be, and hence tallrick's complaints are somewhat justified.

The county/city definitely needs to do some serious work addressing these issues in its comprehensive plan. It is good to know that they are working on it, but I personally think it is going to be a very difficult problem to solve.

Part of what makes Miami so pretty is the nature like beaches, lakes and the view. NYC has no view to begin with and other than a sliver of nature called Central park its not 1/10 as pretty as Miami.

IMO to many buildings esp those tall ones look stupid here. You dont want a place like Miami being built up like NY.

A Democrat city was so desperate to get rid of the nightmare that Mayor Dinkins was that they voted for a Rep .

So yes he is the saviour of NYC . Ask Dem Mark Greene who ran against him the second time how little votes he got.

Ofcourse you wont give Rudy the credit he deserves perhaps you prefer the porno times square that was a dive compared to the Disney-MTV among many other companies Rudy "replaced "them with.

Don't forget to mention police commissioner Bratton. He's also a major reason the crime rate was reduced by so much.

Nobody seems to be talking about whether all this building is even sustainable?
