Yes, I agree. If someone would be very frustrated in the absence of lots of government involvement/social engineering, etc., Florida is not a good state for them.

THat's kind of a different issue than whether the government gets involved and does social engineering, etc. though.

I've never been to a "bad" area of the US that I thought was very bad, and it's not that I've not been many places, although I never spent much time in Detroit. Trying to quantify or quantitatively compare two different areas in terms of "badness" is a bit futile, seeing how "good/bad" are subjective, and even if we try to correlated them to something objective, "bad" is likely to be ambiguous.

That "angry city" story was particularly absurd though when you look at the actual observable criteria they used.

Yeah I'm sure alot of neighborhoods are very dangerous, but I'm just speakin on behalf of the neighborhoods I went through, which were very run down but peoples attitudes seemed different compared to run down areas where Americans (black or white) live. I could tell that most of the people were either Jamaican or Haitian (Carribean).

If you spent more time in Detroit you'd realize it isn't so hard. You'd also realize what it is like to be scared in an area.

I see it completely the other way.

Government involvement/social engineering is the primary creator of ghettos and bad areas. The government monster creates the messes and then proclaims it is the sole saviour to fix them...but a funny thing occurs...the government gets more involved and things only get worse.

Vastly smaller federal, state, and local governments which avoid social engineering and instead apply themselves lightly and evenly provide by far the best environment for all citizens.

Do you have some specific examples of how this tends to happen in Florida? I'm just not sure what you're referring to.

What's wrong with their criteria?

The criteria were not indicative of people being angry. What they actually observed were things like blood pressure data, traffic volume data, etc. Anger is an emotion. Although even this is not a guarantee, the best well to tell if someone is angry is by asking them what they're feeling. The second best way is to observe some of the behavior most commonly associated with anger (such as someone screaming at you, etc.). There's no reliable way to correlate things like blood pressure with anger, and we know that there are a lot of people with high blood pressure who are not at all angry.

I think all one needs to do is look around.

All over the US the ghettos are much larger since the Great Society was implemented. Detroit turned into a giant mess long before the Big3 went downhill. I would guess that a similar timeline can be found in Miami or any other large US city. Social engineering is the primary cause.

Remove all the government incentives to be poor and helpless and watch those ghettos contract while increased production and quality of life get better.
