As far as rural, about the closest thing you're going to get to that is South Dade. Try the Redlands area. Head south on Krome Ave/SW 177th Ave from Kendall Drive, and you'll be driving straight through Miami-Dade's farm country.

There's got to be some landowner down there that would be willing to let you park a van on his property for some monthly rent and some manual labor help around the property.

You won't know until you try right?

Check out Craigslist or something...

BTW, I LOVE MetroZoo, if only from the visitor standpoint. Ron McGill, one of the top dogs down there, is very respected and high-profile in the community. He's always on the local (and some national) radio and TV stations, and is always making the rounds at local schools doing animal demonstrations and promoting ecological mindfulness to our little ones.

i was driving around Miami for a few weeks last year and I found lots of acres available west of the major developments in homestead, fl city, and west of 33187 area code....most were asking 150-250k for an acre....in today's market I bet I can get an acre for 100k and deal with dirt roads solar panels and well water for a few years and sell the plot for development.

I have lots of agricultural experience and I plan on running a mini farm to gain agricultural status for fun and profit not to mention the exemptions on property tax and such.

I don't know if you would be able to get 1 acre for 100k in the redlands. That area is beautiful but expensive as hell. I think a lot of people in Miami would live there if they could afford it, including me.

I believe they also have restrictions on land sale & zoning, since they want to keep that area rather rural. But I could be wrong.

they do have lots of restrictions but I have planned to meet them.

My place would be purely agricultural at a glance.

I read your posts, and you sound like you know what you are doing. Miami is a very weird place, but it's not the Congo. You'll do fine; best of luck to you.

Well, I haven't been to that zoo in years. I don't like zoos, cage less or otherwise. I had to go because I was a reporter and was doing a story on it. I found out that it's not altogether cage-less. The animals go in cages at night. Cats go in cages a little bigger than they are. I asked the zookeeper how they get the cats to go in the cages after being outside all day. He said if they want to eat, they'll go in. I was so mad. I don't know if the elephants had cages but they looked cramped and unhappy outside. And the first thing I saw when I walked in the lobby was a stuffed lion. I couldn't believe that. It was in a display case. But that was years ago. It might have changed since. I hope.

Other animals have worse fates. I thought they looked ok & comfortable. Zoos are a great way to teach children to respect & love animals. Sometimes you have to choose the lesser of two evils.

Metrozoo is actually a very good zoo, IMO. The animals aren't caged like other zoos, particularly the larger animals such as gorillas, lions, tigers, etc. It's actually one of the best zoos I've been to -- and very large, so you'll get your money's worth.

trust me....I have been a zookeeper for 10 years, animals are MUCH happier in Miami than zoos up north....guess where tropical animals spend the many months of cold weather in northern zoos....in a cage

Miami has the best weather on planet earth and weather is life to animals.
