Can't say I understand this ranking....all but one of the cities (Bakersfield, CA) are large suburbs of other cities. Though no surprise that where I currently live (Aurora, CO) made it as well.

Take it from a Cuban who's lived for 16 years in Hialeah, this town is among the worst US cities for a clean living family lifestyle. It only takes a short walk in most areas of Hialeah, specially East or Hialeah Gardens, to find all sorts of crime-prone characters. Among this peculiar bunch, you'll see pot-smoking teenage gangster wannabes, drug-addict & alcoholic junkies, drug-dealing badass wannabe refs (balseros), and the list goes on. In recent years unlike the past, there has been a very strong influence of recent immigrants, mostly Cuban & Puerto Rican, with an outlawish, reckless attitude who are plaguing the streets with aggressive driving & border-line illegal behavior. Even the elderly in this town have turned to behave agressively & obnoxiously in public. Additionally, to protect & to serve this circus, you have a government & a police department, which is quite possibly the most incompetent, under-trained & corrupt in the country. This is not to mention the fact, that the city of Hialeah itself, having a generally 3rd world country-looking architecture; other than the long-abandoned Horse Race Track, has no tourist point of interest or landmark, let alone any significant places of entertaiment.

Hialeah would benefit from a huge park, smack in the middle of it, along with a decent library, better zoning laws and a good old fashioned clean up. The responsibility doesn't just lie with local government though; the residents must show an active interest in improving the city too.
You know what though....Hialeah isn't the worst place on earth. While in Massachusetts, I paid a visit to a town called Fall River and trust me when I say that Fall River would make Hialeah look like Coral Gables. In fact, Fall River is mostly white, so it kind of proves anyone wrong who claims that only black or Hispanic areas are "ghetto", because Fall River is probably the worst ghetto I've ever seen, where 99.99% of the residents are degenerate thugs.

I agree with your posts except for the library part. The city has made some improvements and innovations to the library system, much to the praise and laurels of The Miami Herald.
As far as the residents, I just think the vast majority is too recent an immigrant to really have any community pride.

I agree with this. I know I tend to be very harsh on Hialeah, but this is very true. You can't really expect people who've only lived in an area for a short period of time to take pride in their community. As stupid as it may sound, I do think that a massive park would help, along with some sort of landscaping that would make the area greener.

When you and others are harsh on Hialeah, I agree with you because I live in Hialeah. As far as a park is concerned, you are right about that too even though Amelia Earhart is in Hialeah. I also think west of the Palmetto is a crying shame. At least some of the eastern parts have communities with lakes, etc.
A funny story: the city was giving away trees a few weekends ago in a park somewhat close to Telemundo. I told myself they should keep half the trees and plant them in the park! It was a nice park, but boy was it devoid of trees.

You'd be surprised how much of a postive impact that a few trees (not just palm trees) can have. I honestly think that a greener Hialeah would be a better Hialeah.
In all seriousness, Hialeah isn't that bad. It's loud, a bit too tacky and lacking in things to do, but I've always felt relatively safe there, because people have enough respect not to mess with you.
You know, what really opened my eyes was a visit to a town in Massachusetts that was a true "white ghetto" called Fall River. Trust me when I say that town makes Hialeah look beyond good. It just goes to show that every culture in the US has its "ghetto" elements and that actually, Hialeah has an unfairly bad reputation.
Hialeah is basically a new community with new arrivals. You can't expect the residents of Hialeah to develop community spirit overnight, but I'm sure that in 50 years time, Hialeah will be considered a very culturally important part of Miami.
