Do we have neighborhood crime watch programs?

Do any of you belong to a crime watch program?

Do we work with our youth to keep them out of trouble?

Boy Scout leaders?

Big Brother Big Sisters?

The Optimist Club?

Masons?

Are we leaders in our community?

or any other program.

When I get run over, if I survive, I'll let you know how it goes.

I can't get anyone at city hall to care. I can't get people in the area (that I've spoken to) to care enough to do anything. The police seem oblivious. Eventually there will be a traffic light at every intersection, and it will be moot.

Until then, all I can do when crossing is to wait for an opening in traffic. I can't assume that anyone will stop. If they do (maybe once every few weeks), then I will be pleasantly surprised. More usually, when you try to cross, you get horns, middle fingers, and yelling.

Ten or so years ago, a lot of people would stop at crosswalks. I don't know what changed, other than that there was a sudden flood of new people when the gigantic condos and rental apartments (Floridian, Flamingo, the Waverly, when it first opened) came on line. Having spent time in Maui, you can bet your life that people there will stop for a pedestrian in the road.

I promise you I'm not exaggerating about police not stopping at crosswalks. I got the license plate of one officer and reported him, but I doubt anything came of it. In my experience, the Miami Beach police don't want to be bothered with such petty concerns. That, I presume, is a function of city hall.

*-*-*-*

The Saturday after Halloween, 2007, I was run over by scooter driving down Alton Road, turning left into 14th Court. I was in the crosswalk (with lines that STILL need repainting), and the guy plowed right into me. I went flying. When I got up off the ground the guy cursed me out and took off. I didn't need an ambulance and I couldn't get a good description of the guy or his license plate, so the police had me chill out there for almost 90 minutes before a cop showed up. She took the information and suggested I get out of the street (a bicyclist almost ran me over while I was waiting on the sidewalk). Dealing with the Miami Beach police was an exercise in wasting time.

And it is legal to ride bicycles on the sidewalk in Miami Beach.

Ten years ago was a different culture that care about family and community values (IMHO)... Can we bring this back? and how we do it?

I rather look at a fix, is an up-hill challenge, but rather do the right thing than allow others to run the city down....

ONLY in Miami:

After 26 tickets, driver in fatal crash still had license - Today's Top Stories - MiamiHerald.com

I'm glad that at least some people are outraged by this (see comments).

I hope the scum gets life in jail, or even death.

I don't want to ever raise children here and my wife is very much in agreement. "tolerating" the drivers here isn't enough and I doubt that anything will ever change (it'll probably get worse, unless drastic steps are taken).

I think it may be too late honestly. There are too many low life's and scum in Miami. But I wouldnt say it is completely impossible. If jobs were there, and many natives who fled years ago came back, I could see it turning around. But nobody in their right mind that left years ago is going to come back, so it's probably not gonna happen.

"But Delrisco, the suspect in the red-light wreck that killed three children in South Miami-Dade Sunday, always did enough to keep his license, records show."

After 26 tickets, driver in fatal crash still had license - Today's Top Stories - MiamiHerald.com

Got 26 tickets, ran a red light that killed three children in an accident, and kept his license?

Other disturbing details from that article, regarding this guy not getting his license taken from him:

"That's not unusual in Miami-Dade's swollen traffic court system, lawyers say," and even more disturbing, "Sometimes, police officers failed to show up in court. On some traffic stops, they cited the wrong laws." And last but not least, "
Most recently, in January 2008, a Florida state trooper ticketed Delrisco for driving the wrong way on a Palmetto Expressway ramp at Northwest 122nd Street. The charge was dismissed when the trooper did not show up in court."

I am speechless.

Part of the problem is that 99% of the population doesn't walk anywhere so they will never experience the problem. Like any problem that is experienced by only 1% of the voters it will get a low priority by city hall.

One thing that could be done is more public awareness. When I was 12 I went to England and found out over there that cars have to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. At the time I had never heard of such a thing (and this was back in the early 80's). Later I learned that it was the law here as well but, even then, I thought that someone would have to be crazy to try and cross if there was a car headed toward the crosswalk.

Maybe some public awareness commercials explaining basic traffic rules would help. There are many situations that could be helped by informational commercials. For example, a person is making a u-turn at a green light and the car on the stree to his left is making a right turn on red. Who has the right of way? I think it is the guy doing the u-turn since his light is green but I'm not 100% sure.

I think Miami is the worst city when it comes to driving but, like many problems, once you get out of the US there is a whole new level of lowness. Try crossing the street in China or even a 1st world country like Japan. It's an experience to remember.

No wonder I prefer BIG vehicles and avoid walking anywhere next to a street. Once I was hit in the front yard of a home. Good thing I was in a Bobcat loader. The driver who started that accident also drove off. Another time an idiot driver rear ended my truck, destroying his car. He drove off, steaming from the radiator while I was getting a good laugh. Of course my truck was undamaged. Bad driving has always been in Miami, and any city with a relentless flow of immigrants will be the most unsafe.
