Black/White or Black/Latin interracial couples?
Hey everyone,
Thinking of moving to either Seattle or Miami (due to no income taxes in either state, I pay out of the highest bracket so no Income Tax makes a huge difference for me), and so far Seattle seems to be very racially tolerant. Blacks, Whites, Asians, Hispanics, etc all seem to get along great. There appears to be A LOT of interracial dating, especially between blacks and whites which I consider to be a great litmus test for racial (in)tolerance.
One would think Miami would be even more open to interracial dating, but from what I've read that is not the case. Are interracial couples, especially Black/white or Black/Hispanic actually TABOO in Miami? Or does it have a lot more to do with socio-economic status, and a wealthy black guy would not be treated like a second class citizen?
Sorry if it sounds like I have a chip on my shoulder, but for my next big move I'd like to live somewhere with as little racial intolerance as possible. I currently live in New York, and interracial couples (Black/White especially) are still very taboo here despite what anyone thinks (my white ex-girlfriends and I ALWAYS got stares, but never my black ex-girlfriends. It gets very irritating after a while).
I'm a 25 year old single guy, self-employed, just looking to party, and intend to purchase a condo on the beach, if any of that matters.
Thanks for all your help,
J

You have found contention centered around race, whereas I have always had issues with culture/language here in Miami. Some cultures stink, and I don't know every dialect of Spanish. You might run into a blond, white skinned woman in downtown Miami who may not know any English-this happens all the time with South American Hispanics who come here only to spend money.
There are also "Emo" black chicks who tote I pods and listen to punk rock. Sadly, most of your interracial luck will not be found on mainland Miami, only the beach. Almost all of this city's ugliness is confined to its mainland.
You will love Miami Beach. Enjoy.

Sadly, there is some prejudice against blacks in Miami. However, money seems to trump prejudice. Black and white (either Hispanic or non-Hispanic) dating doesn't seem to be all that common, but since it sounds like you are living a fairly affluent life, most people with a prejudice will likely put it away. I have seen black guys with "colored" Latin girls, but honestly, you will not find too many of those in affluent areas in Miami. I am sure no one will bother you due to your race, but since you will likely be hanging out in upscale restaurants/bars in Brickell, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and South Beach (places where, overall, there really aren't many black people), don't be surprised if people are "surprised" that you have a white date. However, with that said, I have a very successful black friend who lived in Miami for a while and absolutely loved it. He is an outgoing person and made plenty of friends, and never had a problem with the interracial dating issue.

Very true. The Hispanic monoculture here can be cruel in subtle ways. On the mainland (Brickell, Coral Gables) they might look 'surprised' but nothing more. On the beach they wouldn't even look surprised. He said he was looking at condos on the beach anyways.

Thanks so much for the quick replies!
I have no problem with the whole having to speak Spanish deal... I actually just started taking the Pimsleur Spanish course for that very reason, and should have a decent grasp within a few months, hopefully lol
It's good to know Miami Beach won't be a problem in terms of interracial dating. I love women of all colors and backgrounds... beauty is beauty. But when you say the beach won't be a problem, does that mean I'll be confined to only the beach if I want to just "blend in?" What encompasses Miami Beach exactly?
Thanks again for your help,
J

You will not have to speak Spanish. I know plenty of people that do not speak Spanish that love living in Miami. If you plan to live in the City of Miami Beach, you will almost certainly hear more English than Spanish.
With that said, if you want to "blend in" South Beach (the southern portion of the City of Miami Beach) is best - there are lots of black tourists there and a few black residents. If you want to have a good time and don't mind being one of the only black people around, I would encourage you to check out some of the upscale dining/entertainment districts on the mainland such as Coconut Grove, Brickell, and Coral Gables. I assure you that you will meet plenty of white American, European, and Latin girls that will be glad to hang out with a well-dressed, successful black guy. Again, money trumps any prejudices people have, and as a person looking for an affluent area, you will not have to deal with the stares and rude treatment that you would be more likely to get in working class non-black areas.

You're right, money trumps everything in Miami. Even class.

This is an aspect of modern-day society that is seen in cities all over the country and all over the world; it is not unique to Miami. Some of the classiest people I have met have a lot of money; some of the most crass people I have met also have a lot of money.

I spend a lot of time in Miami. I don't know you, the type of person you are, where specifically you plan on living, etc. Now, I might be guilty of being very generic here, but I do not think you will have a problem in Miami. The "racially tolerant" term can mean many different things to many different people. I think it is more about the people, maybe the very small groups of people, than it is about the city, at least as it relates to Miami. On the other hand, I would say the same thing about NYC, although you said differently (you said NY, however, I am not sure if you are talking about NYC specifically).
Maybe I missed it or was completely oblivious to it, but I never saw any of this in NYC in and around me, my relationships, my friends, etc. I went from all the way uptown to all the way downtown, east, west, and so on. Is it a cultural thing? Perhaps. Is it an economic or socio-economic class thing? Perhaps.
Regardless, why not fly down there, check it out, spend some time, etc. Any friends or co-workers down there? While there is a large "Latin" or "Hispanic" cultural, ethnic, etc. component, I think Miami (parts of it) is a melting pot with diversity, fun, excitement with a lot to offer. Good luck.
