I believe it has to do with budget cuts. FIU does not have as many programs or teachers as it did before. Not to put FIU alumni down, but I always thought that any body with a remote lizard brain could get in. Like a step after Miami Dade Community College.

That is exactly it. FIU is a fourth tier school, they are about as selective as a homeless person is in regard to where their next meal comes from. These budget cuts have been going on for State Universities for a LONG time now. A lot of these schools are in a LOT of trouble.

You strike me as someone who wouldn't subscribe to a good ol' boy, hierarchical, prestige-based classification system. FIU is a good school that has a lot more to offer than a school in a little redneck town like Gainesville or a Golden Corral/Waffle House mecca like Tallahassee.

I must say, however, the females in these small college towns are way hotter than FIU's mass of 5's and 6's.

Its a fourth tier school with a fourth tier education. It is what it is.... With that said, you don't need to go to a tier 1 school for every major. Depends on what you are after.

Where do you get this FIU "fourth tier" info from? According to some, it is the most selective school in Florida as of 2008. Their law program is low ranked, even though their small, 200 student graduating classes have routed UM and FSU at passing the bar. The CPA program at FIU is also highly regarded, and FIU's accountants pass the CPA at a much higher rate tham UM, as has been the case for years. Not that I don't believe you, I just want to read this "4th tier" status from a reputable source. Thanks.

Hey Cubanito, stop giving us Cubans a bad name and stop those insults on Gainesville and Tallahassee citizens. If you don't like it, go back to Cuba. It is their homeland, you are only an immigrant.

FIU is always trying to compare themselves with UM, UF and FSU but these schools do not compare themselves with FIU...FIU, you have a long way to go in order to make the big three the big four. Just be happy with what you do have and do not worry about UM, UF and FSU, these are the top schools in Florida and most around the country agree as they have probably not heard of FIU.

UF, UM and FSU are quickly starting to learn they're not the only schools in the state. FIU, USF, and UCF are the state's up-and-coming fastest growing universities. That's why the SUS ranks all 5 in a higher tier system above the other schools because of their large research funding, hence the higher tuition than the other state universities.

On that note, here are some more rankings where FIU ranks very high:

U.S. News & World Report (2008) ranks the Landon Undergraduate School of Business 7th in the nation and ranks the Chapman Graduate School of Business 11th amongst business schools in the United States for international business.[7] BusinessWeek (2006) ranks the College of Business among the top 15% of graduate business schools in the U.S., 1st in South Florida, and in the top 25 among public business schools in the U.S.[8]

In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Florida International University College of Law ranked 1st in the state of Florida with a bar passing rate of 94%, and 1st in the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam at 96%.[9]

As of 2007, more valedictorians from South Florida elect to attend Florida International University than any other university in the country. [10] Admission standards have also increased with acceptance rates dropping from 63.2% for Fall 2005 to 33% for Fall 2008, making FIU the most selective university in Florida.[11][12] For Fall 2008, the average incoming freshmen had a median SAT score of 1080-1210, a 23-26 ACT score and a 3.4-4.1 high school GPA
