Perhaps we should try to ask former Chief Timoney, replaced with a Cuban by a Cuban (Regalado) if he feels somewhat discriminated against. Perhaps employers who feel as strongly as I do about this issue should start putting "only English speaking Americans need apply" and see how that goes down with the Cuban Mafia.

I'm over it.

You have Chinese, Koreans, Russians, Haitians, French Africans, Indians, Pakistanis and plenty of others coming to this country in numbers. They all assimilate one way or another. They ask for no special treatment, when it comes to language.

From experience, I've dealt with Mexicans in Georgia that make an effort to communicate when they need something, or when offering you a service. It also has to do with the locals not tolerating the "Se Habla Espanol solamente" mentality.

Miami is what it is..... Hope in another 20 years, it's not a major issue with the kids (hopefully) learning the language. I won't hold my breath.
You hit the nail on the head buddy. No other recently arrived immigrant group has done what the Cubans have done to South Florida. The Chinese-Americans have fully assimilated, while keeping their own sense of culture. Although San Francisco has a huge Chinatown, those people assimilated and love this country and the people in it. Miami has Chongatown, where no one else but Cubans are welcome. Even other Latin Americans are tired of the BS. End the Cuban Adjustment Act now.

On a side note, I have worked in the past at both Dolphin and Miami International Mall for many years in the past and I can honestly tell you- it was often problematic. Not because of my intermediate Spanish skills, but because the customers- (including tourists!) would always tell me I needed to speak Spanish because I live here. Its getting really old.

If I get the job, I will be happy but concerned. And if I don't get it...and am told the person they selected is bilingual- I will be livid.
the company is opening the first store in Miami it's only logical that they want a bilingual manager. The store will get customers from all over the county, not just Pinecrest many who are only Spanish speakers Companies do market research, they knew the segment and most likely invested in Spanish ads and commercials. It's not discrimination. Most people in Miami speak Spanish

corporations go where the money is, the customers pay everybodys salaries including the CEO district manager, hr specialists and store managers. A business cannot just impose a language to their customers, cause the customers take their dollars somewhere else where they feel comfortable

Living here in South Fla, if you dont speak Spanish it will extremely difficut for you to find a job in Miami. This is not an indictment, commentary, or an editorial opinion----it is just factual.

Most employers in the Miami area prefer you to be bilingual. However, if you just speak Spanish you can still get hired. However, if your only language is English and you wish to be gainfully employed in Miami----good luck.

Again, I am not trying to create a tempest here---its just truthful. South Florida has become heavily Hispanic and nothing is going to reverse this trend. This situation is transitioning to Broward county which is now 25% Hispanic, and is projected to be around 40-45% Hispanic by 2020.

You will have two options in about 10 years----become bilingual or hire moving vans.

What, the same John Timoney that was brought in under Cuban-American mayor Manny Diaz? And if you're claiming he was simply fired for no apparent reason (other than your claims that the Cubans all run some crazy conspiracy against everyone not like them in this county) then you're willfully ignoring the facts. But you can't seem to get past this belief that Cubans are out to get everyone else, so I don't know what to tell you.

For the record, Diaz wasn't too bad. I think that his heart was in the right place. Regalado was a huge step backwards. If you're going to replace the Chief of Police, at least don't replace him with one of the "old boys". Favoritism among Miami's Cuban community is very commonplace. I have witnessed it myself on numerous occasions and in numerous situations. Go go Hialeah or 8th Street and tell me how "welcome" you feel.

I don't believe there is an anti non-Cuban conspiracy going on, but you have to face the truth: Miami is being run by Cubans, for Cubans. Their agendas pretty much dominate. I guess you either like it, live with it and become oblivious to it, or dislike it and seek to leave. Personally, I do not want to live any place that landers to one group of people. A true melting pot is a place where a bunch of different ethnic groups can co-exist, but unite under one common language (in the case of the US, it's called English).

I wonder what would happen if jobs started posting "no Spanish speakers need apply"? Answer: those firms would get the crap sued out of them.

I'm about to translate my resume to Spanish so that I can hope to get a call back from employers. I'm tired of these so called EOE's not calling or emailing me back because they can tell from my name and application that I'm not Hispanic. It's bs and it needs to stop. Tomorrow I will call a lot of different companies and see which ones ask me if I'm bilingual, compile a list and contact an out of state or non Hispanic attorney to see if there's anything that can be done. I'm tired of calling some places and being asked everytime I call if I'm bilingual then being told they're only hiring bilinguals. This has been happening since February, the same company every time I call. The majority in America speak English and last I checked, Miami is part of America, regardless of how many Hispanics live here.

How do you know they are not calling you back because of your name? Maybe you just don't fit the bill.
