Overtown and that entire area are going to be squeezed out eventually by the developers. Once the new Marlins Stadium is complete you will see them trying to take advantage of the area in putting up restaurants, more condos and shops in the area. Look for more High Rise apartments because some people who work downtown will be wanting to move closer to work especially younger people. Overtown has been a blight on Miami for decades. If the community leaders of Overtown really cared they would have taken care of the problem by now. Mark my word, when the development starts in earnest you will see them come out of the wood work claiming the history of the area is being destroyed by racists. What history? A violent run down Moderator cut: Flamingwaste? It is their very corrupt ways of thinking that are racist toward their own people.
The leaders use the people as pawns to extort money in the name of helping the poor. Why are the poor are still poor in the area? Why do they not have grocery stores and shopping centers in the area and normal redevelopment? Because the refuse to do anything about the crime. Why do something about the crime when keeping the neighborhood bad keeps their wallets lined with cash. Development brings normalcy. Normalcy brings lower crime. Lower crime takes away the need for powerful community leaders telling people they are fighting for them. If there is no fight there is no need for community leaders. They are replaced by self reliant people. Keeping the area a high crime place insures no development and no development means continued power.
It will be a great day for the city of Miami when the last crack house is torn down and the last low life is thrown out. The only problem will be where to locate the good people who have been forced to endure life in the area due to cultural and economic handicaps.
I loved the quote from a neighbor who took people in during the latest round of shooting. When someone told her the person who was shot may be the original shooter she said she didn't care because she was taking care of someone's child. It is that very attitude that causes the problems in Overtown. Protecting and aiding criminals leads to more criminals because it becomes accepted and becomes a normal part of life. Someone can kill your mother or child but because they are from the neighborhood they are to be protected at all costs. Until that attitude changes no one in Overtown will be safe.
Overtown needs to go and go quickly.

Until people start "snitching" on those criminals, the city will not change much. The sad part is by not snitching they are pretty much sending a message to the criminals, its ok we will not tell because we are to scared. I saw a news story about Overtown on the news last week, and its looking better in some parts that the city has gone in and built nice sidewalks, store fronts etc, yet the stores are empty, what business is doing to move in there right now...
Its already happening the area is slowly getting better on the edges, and they will eventually be kicked out, look at the black area in the Grove, its getting smaller, and eventually they will be pushed out too. Where will they go, probably down in South Miami Dade, Cutler Bay, Goulds, Florida City, Naranja, Homestead... But this is what the county has wanted to do for a long time, as its an eye sore for them when tourist come.

What about NW Miami? you only mentioned the bad neighborhoods in SW Miami. NW Miami is closer to them, they are already there.

I saw it coming for a while now. I see most of these areas (areas near Downtown Miami and S. Beach getting better, while people in these areas being displaced to South Miami Dade areas etc. I wonder, what long term effects this will have for areas like Kendall, Hammocks and such?

my opinion is the opposite. As things get worse some of these "up and coming communities" will not make it back.

Wild,
Are you talking about Goulds, Florida City, Homestead and the surrounding areas? I don't see any of those areas making a come back period.
Things are tough all over, but I don't know about Goulds and the surrounding areas . I think if Downtown Miami developers and sellers were realistic with their prices, and things stabilized, they would do better than Goulds, and the like.
Sad thing Dade County and Miami city planners did a mediocre job with the city.

I actually live in Goulds with my Wife and 2 year old daughter. I live just west of us 1 and 216th street. Every day i have to drive through a 4 way stop, that's infested with drug dealers and men and women that are high as a kite. It enrages me, and I worry about the future I'm providing my daughter with. For the most part my neighborhood is a mixture of hispanics, blacks and 1st generation Americans. We all get along great, are hard working class, and our kids play together everyday. We just always keep in mind the crap that resides west of us. I don't see things getting better, especially with the economy the way that it is. Just last week a man was shot at the Publix down the street in an attempted robbery. I don't even take my daughter with me to the store.
