It might very well be safe to drive 90+ in teh Florida Turnpike under good conditions, but isn't it a problem if you're doing 90 while other people on the same road are doing 65?

But Florida is a bit less strict and it should be. Going 80mph on the turnpike is not dangerous at all. When I make a Miami-Orlando run I will se my cruise control at about 82-83. And depending on flow of traffic or the how far infront of me I can see and the road I wont hesitate to go 90mph+.
You do 90+ in a 65mph zone? That's ridiculous.

Well, that's a speed differeential of 25 mph. Would you feel safe sitting in a parked car and another car drove by on the lane next to you at 25 mph? I think most of us would say 'yes'. Now if they suddenly change lanes without signaling you need to drop 25 mph of speed quickly. The problem here though is the illegal lane change without signaling, not the speed.

People in Miami always use their turn signals though, so I dont see it as a problem.

I dont speed if traffic is not going fast also. Yea some cars and trucks and buses might be doing 65 but the majority of traffic goes 10-12 over anyway. Atleast in my experiances when driving. Also most of the turnpike is 70mph and thats where the 82-90mph driving is done.

70mph for most of the turnpike not 65, and its not ridiculous on a straight dry road with 5 others cars for 5 miles, I really dont see a problem with it.

Parked cars don't change lanes. Problems happen when people suddenly change lanes, don't see someone coming up in their blind spot, drift out of their lane, etc.

From my experience driving in France, it's not unusual for a line of BMWs, Mercedes, and other random cars to drive 180 Km/h (112 MPH), while traffic to right is going maybe 140 (87 MPH) for cars, and 110 Km/h (68 MPH) for trucks. Trucks there actually pay close attention to the speed limit there. The problem is that people, including trucks, would pull into the left lane periodically, so if you were going 110, you would be up to a passing truck in no time. It required a lot of braking, with everything in the care flying forward each time.

The accident rate in France was double the rate here, and when accidents happen, people tend to die. I think they've been cracking down on speeding more in the past few years.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather drive fast and take my chances...but I'm just speaking for myself.

Default Lazy Officers/Speeders

Get the number of the the police vehicle and make a call to the watch commander and let him know. This can be done anonomous. Careless and reckless driving only kills others. What if you were driving like an idiot and hit someone you loved? Or a small child? Vehicles are weapons and driving is a privledge. Buckle up peeps.

To the Original Poster. . .Please do your research before posting. The Miami Beach Police Department is ranked #2 in the COUNTRY for traffic enforcement in departments of their size. Secondly, on any Weekend Night, the City of Miami Beach have more people on it's streets per capita than any other city in the United States! (yes...more than Vegas...look it up). Here is the interesting point...while you were walking down 17th street...were you robbed? No? Wow...maybe that cop staying there instead of chasing two morons prevented it! Not all police action is quantitative. Their mere presence prevents God knows how many crimes! Let's look at the flip side, let's say he chased after the morons, and one of them crashed into an innocent victim....Then you would be on here admonishing him again! It is popular to hate the cops...until you need them that is. Before you ask, am I a cop...nope....by my daugter is alive because of one.

They were either racing or one driver was trying to get the better of the other (who was certainly not going to let him). In any case, my guess is these two cars were going about 80-90 mph. As they flew by, I noticed a police officer parked at the intersection facing 17th St. He had his lights on top of the car lit but they weren't flashing. I figured he'd immediately go after these two cars. But..NOOOOOO. He did absolutely NOTHING. He just sat there in his car. I stopped midway in the intersection and turned to him and threw my arms out to my side and gave him a very confused look. Still, the officer did NOTHING.
I am really getting sick and tired of the police in Miami Beach doing nothing to stop the incredibly hostile driving that goes on in this most walkable place in Florida. They don't stop speeders. They don't stop people who run red lights or stop signs. They don't stop people who all but run over pedestrians in the crosswalks.
I hear that the police force and its union are very powerful and that they'll go after anyone who goes after them. Does anyone have experience with this? I certainly don't want to get on their bad side, I just want to be safe as a pedestrian and driver in my community.
What makes you think that officer was not occupied with a call ? If they are assigned a call, they are not completed until they are completed...simpe as that. Plus, racing after speeders doing 80mph will only cause them to go faster and increase the chances of an accident on their part and the cops part.

Silly civilian.....tricks are for kids. Go home and watch CSI and be happy.
