Useless Miami Beach Police Officer
Last night I was walking East on 17th Street at about 9PM. As I approached Michigan Ave, I heard a loud rumble come up from behind me. In a flash, two cars flew by me. They were either racing or one driver was trying to get the better of the other (who was certainly not going to let him). In any case, my guess is these two cars were going about 80-90 mph. As they flew by, I noticed a police officer parked at the intersection facing 17th St. He had his lights on top of the car lit but they weren't flashing. I figured he'd immediately go after these two cars. But..NOOOOOO. He did absolutely NOTHING. He just sat there in his car. I stopped midway in the intersection and turned to him and threw my arms out to my side and gave him a very confused look. Still, the officer did NOTHING.
I am really getting sick and tired of the police in Miami Beach doing nothing to stop the incredibly hostile driving that goes on in this most walkable place in Florida. They don't stop speeders. They don't stop people who run red lights or stop signs. They don't stop people who all but run over pedestrians in the crosswalks.
I hear that the police force and its union are very powerful and that they'll go after anyone who goes after them. Does anyone have experience with this? I certainly don't want to get on their bad side, I just want to be safe as a pedestrian and driver in my community.

That's pretty sad. Almost like they are afraid to get after these idiots or something. Or maybe they just dont care, I dunno. But it's disturbing.
I know that Miami has a lot of these people driving, and that's scary. It's worse down there than any other place I've been or visited. I hate driving down there. The absolute worst place to drive.

I drive a Z06 Corvettte and I have somebody pull up next to me at least once a week and rev their engine looking for a race. It usually happens at night but sometimes they even do it in the morning or at lunchtime. 8th street near FIU seems to be a favorite spot. Usually its young Hispanic males in rice rockets.

I have that happen to. Young, usually Hispanic males in these little civics and other little cars that have been modified. And I drive a truck, but I guess b/c it's a good looking truck and I have a set of nice wheels, they think I am up for it.

Totally agree with you there.
I used to live around that area a couple of years ago and it seemed that every Saturday in the a.m. (from midnight) it sounded like Daytona 500.
Young punks trying to outdo each other.

I don't think it is a matter of the police being lazy. I think it is something they have grown accustomed to over time. Meaning, their supervisor never did anything about it, so they don't do anything about it.
It is really something that has to be addressed from the top and when the leadership starts to enforce the standard, then it will change.

You should have written down the date and time as well as the squad car number of this cop. Then you should have gone in to the precinct and filed a complaint. Nothing is going to change if all we do is log online and complain about it. People need to sand up and hold these people accountable.

The Miami Beach police also don't stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks. I finally got the license plate number of one officer who almost ran me over and reported it, but I doubt anything was done.
My experience with the Miami Beach police has been uniformly bad. (No, I haven't been arrested.)

Those "Hispanic " males are Cuban 90% of the time .... how do I know well my brother in law is a cop with the city of Miami ... a job I would not want to have and I know puts my sister through hell
They live in a really nice area of Coral Springs and when he has go down to Miami to work , he claims it is a chore . He claims that most City of Miami , Miami Beach and Miami Dade cops almost have a "why bother " attitude because the court system is so lenient and ineffective in Dade County so the cops live in perpetual frustration .
