Miami is totally a Latin city. Aside from Miami Beach, most people in Miami are of Cuban, Colombian or Nicaraguan origin. There is no real other diversity here. The black people (many Haitian) live in the worst areas and are generally brushed aside by the Cuban majority. Miami is really a city run by Cubans for Cubans as the majority of ordinary working class & middle class Americans left right after the Mariel Boatlift incident.

The vibe and feel of Miami really doesn't compare with anywhere else in the United States. To me, it's more of a Caribbean city and has far more in common with San Juan, PR than anywhere in the US. People compare it to Los Angeles a lot, but Los Angeles is still predominantly American and it's far more diverse, in the sense of having Anglo, Asian, Russian and Italian populations.

Personally, I cannot stand Miami, but some people thrive on it. It's really a city you'll either love or hate with a burning passion. It is also not a city where you'll get by being nice and polite. It'll eat you alive, if you're not careful.

The difference is that LA has the film stars & famous people, while Miami has a bunch of wannabes and posers. The only real comparison is that both cities have a grid system, both cities have awful traffic, both cities have palm trees. Miami is predominantly Hispanic, while LA is far more diverse. LA's Hispanic population are of a different demographic anyway and many tend to become completely Americanized. In Miami, the Cubans still call themselves "exiles", despite being handed citizenship on a friggin' platter.

The term "American" is like a term coined for a melting pot of cultures. Anyone who lives in America can be American. =)

So for the poll, yes it's an American city that's American in culture with some out of the country Latino influence as well.

So it's both. =)

But that's just me giving you a hard time OP, lol, I understood what you were trying to say, you just worded the poll answers wrong.

Yes, Miami seems to have more in common with say; Rio De Janiero, Brazil than it does with other US cities.

Cuban majority? Miami has a Hispanic majority, but it doesn't have a Cuban majority.

Actually, according to this source, Cubans are not the majority in the Hispanic group.

There are 242,864 Hispanics in Miami, representing 69.4% of its population. Cubans make up 34.6% of the population. If we take 69.4 minus 34.6, we get 34.8. So, that means that 34.8% of people are a part of Hispanic groups other than Cuban. The number 242,864 divided by 2 is 121,432. The number of Cubans is 121,117, so they're less than half of the 242,864 Hispanics. Because Cubans are less than half of the Hispanic population, they do not make up a majority of the Hispanic population. Cubans are almost half of the Hispanic population, but they're not quite a majority.

Here are the Hispanic groups for Miami:

  • Mexican: 1.4% (5,051)
  • Puerto Rican: 3.4% (11,970)
  • Cuban: 34.6% (121,117)
  • Other Hispanic or Latino: 29.9% (104,726)
5,051 + 11,970 + 104,726 = 121,747 (That number is larger than the number of Cubans.)

1.4 + 3.4 + 29.9 = 34.7

There must some error, but nonetheless, 34.7 is bigger than 34.6.

In conclusion, Cubans make up a plurality of the Hispanic population, but not a majority.

Any of this confusing?

You make Miami seem so much LESS diverse, it makes me wonder if you even really do live there. Talking about Los Angeles is far more diverse, in the sense of having Anglo, Russian, and Italian populations. Um, Miami has A LOT of Europeans, especially Russians and Italians, where have you been?

Theres no doubt that hispanics are the majority in Miami, but to say that thats all there is in Miami is definitely false. All this HOBB1T dude is doing is feeding into the whole stereotype of Miami only being a "Cuban and Haitian" city, way to rep your city man ....smh, it's a lot more diverse than that. Heres something I stole from another thread made by LAnative10:

These are stats showing the major cities in the south's diversity, as you can see Miami faired pretty well in 2007, ofcourse it's changed a good amount since then. Miami needs to work on it's Asian population a little bit, but besides that it is definitely a diverse city.
