Default Miami's "condo boom"

What are your opinions on the “condo boom” here in Miami? I’m interested to see what the opinions are of people who live / have lived in this city.

Personally, I am against it - at least the sheer scale of it and the locations. The condos being constructed are obviously for the rich and are contributing to the ever increasing cost of living – all for a few rich people that’ll only live here for 3 months of the year and probably won’t contribute anything much to the local economy. I am also against the sheer speed in which these developments are being approved and constructed – it’s crazy. No thought seems to be given to improving transport infrastructure – it’s just build, build, build. From an architectural point of view, I think these buildings (the majority of them) are ugly too – they all look the same. I am all for skyscrapers, but I would rather see more office development than dozens of residential towers dominating the skyline. The condos are basically hogging all the views and ensuring that the little amount of beauty that there is in Miami (the coastline) is reserved purely for the rich and is inaccessible to the poor and middle class.

Thoughts, anyone?

same feeling here...There is a very tiny portion of the population taking a temporary advantage of this "boom".

Who's going to live in all those unsold units?

The booms over. Let the developers eat their condos.

If that's the case....Miami is going to be a damn mess with vacant/unused/partially constructed condo buildings everywhere. Personally, I wish there was enough demand for office space for them to build a few office towers. Miami has such a great potential to have a world-class skyline, but the skyline is dominated by residential condo buildings, built in a hurry for the politicians and developers to have their nice, hefty payouts.

They'll find a use for them or tear them down.

The funny thing is how aggressively some people are trying to sell these pidgeon-hole money pits. Walk through the west side of Dadelend mall and you'll see the Fortune realty people actually passing out flyers to anyone who looks like a sucker...er I mean buyer! They never did that before!

Downtown Miami is lacking and is destined to fail. It has always been this way. A hurricane will only accelerate the process.

We passed by one over by Bird Road. Couldn't believe anyone would actually consider buying there. It looked like an old seedy looking motel.

Was it Bird and 112Ave? That place was a run-down rental complex, and is still 1/2 rentals. Condos from 169,000? You could buy a house there for that much in 2002!

I feel they will eventually have to go down on prices.I noticed some places here have started going half condo half apts because the condo didnt sale like developers thought.Whatever they do they need to do it fast ,prices are horrible.
