My family will be in Miami for a 24 hour layover in April. Any suggestions where to stay that would be a good enough location to the airport or South Beach.....somewhere that we can take a taxi easily to eat and see something cool with three kids. We are looking to spend no more than $150 for a night.
Any suggestions would be helpful

Holiday Inns in 'decent areas', not even South Beach, are $180/NIGHT. The cheapest room on Miami Beach will probably be $200/NIGHT, but they are roach motels, and not as nice as a Holiday Inn. Again, April is the height of tourist season.

I would not try Miami Lakes and go to main street. I go there often and that is not a great place to see. It good for locals not for tourist. There are hotels all around the airport a taxi to south beach will be around $30-35 Just search online for a hotel in Miami Beach South of 25st so 25st-1st You might be able to find a chepaer hotel Downtown there you have Bayside which is a great place for the kids and dinner. Also you could always stay by the airport and go to Dolphin mall which is a huge outlet mall with a lot of things to eat and do which would be a short cab ride from any airport hotel. They even have a hotel in the mall parking lot.
Good luck. If you want to see real miami go to South Beach, Eat dinner on Lincoln Road. Downtown and Bayside is nice too. If you just want to be entertained and probably have a cheaper stay, stay by the airport and go to Dolphin mall.

I'd suggest you look at cheap hotels in Downtown and spend the day walking around Downtown, go to a couple museums, go to Bayside, go shopping, maybe take a Biscayne Bay tour, go to the parks, etc. Try the Intercontinental Hotel on Biscayne Blvd across from Bayfront Park, I've heard it's really cheap.

apparently this poster did not see your not more than $150.00 a night condition. those 30 dollar a night hotels he says are nasty nasty nasty.

in miami lakes you will find many ok places to eat (a less discriminating diner might say excellent) and you will often find musicians plying their craft in a very pleasant surrounding and in the company of some very friendly folks.

I'd look around on South Beach for deals. I had a friend who booked a few nights in the President for around 100 per night. (A very good location on Miami Beach). You won't get a better area than South Beach, and if you are going to visit Miami for a day, you might as well be there.
