So what American goes to live in any other country and demands English be the language spoken in all public places including a doctor's office. The only place I know of in the world is one city in Mexico with ex pats who are turning it into an English speaking place.

Good luck with that in France, Germany, Netherlands ...anywhere...

Actually when you go to most european countries, most of the people will speak english. and the funny thing is, from the people i've met from various parts of europe and south america, it is quite funny how many americans go to other countries and complain they don't speak english.

I'm quite aware that English is spoken in Europe. I lived there.

We are not discussing other countries being fluent in English. We all know they are. And they learn in school.

The ISSUE IS THE LANGUAGE SHOWN ON TV AT A DOCTOR'S OFFICE, RIGHT? So I can tell you without a doubt that if there is a TV in a European doctor's office the cartoon is NOT IN ENGLISH.

Back to the question:

Do you feel Americans have the right to demand the cartoon be in English in a foreign country at the doctor's office. A simple question.

That would be either YES or NO.

Here's another question for you. Since you are a college student.

Do you feel that your University should conduct your classes in Spanish? If not, why not? It's no different, right? Too unfair?

How about:

Do you feel all movies in Miami should be shown in Spanish so when you go you need to take an interpreter? That's a better analogy.

Sure, why not? If the entire room is filled with english speaking children, why not? In all reality, it really isn't a very big deal. I highly doubt the people in the office walked in and DEMANDED there be spanish or they will never return :P

All movies? I think somebody is going a bit overboard, although I would choose to see everything in Spanish either way.

At my university, they offer classes in spanish for international students. Most of the workers don't speak english.

This is America. They should have the cartoon for the little kids in ENGLISH, not spanish. (I cant believe I even have to defend my statement)!

If they want to watch the cartoon, they should learn the english language! It's that simple.

Again, I cant believe I have to defend myself in this argument. Thank God I dont live in Miami, it's bad enough as it is in FL already. If they dont know English, they should ASSIMILATE. Learn the english language, it's the right thing to do, and if they have no interest, then they should leave or move to Miami instead.

I know people living in Miami-Dade who do not speak Spanish... and they love it. Despite what other may lead you to believe, you can get by comfortably with English only in most places in the county. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not going to send an old British couple to the auto mechanic in east Hialeah or Sweetwater, but you have got to be kidding me if you think not knowing Spanish is an actual problem in Kendall, Cutler Ridge, Brickell, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Miami Lakes, Aventura, South Miami, and most other places in the county. I can even name a few "Hispanic" people I know that were born and raised in Miami-Dade (in areas that are now 75%+ "Hispanic") and who do not speak Spanish well at all. Sure, many people approach them in Spanish, but they just respond in English and unless the other person is very old or a very recent immigrant, the conversation then proceeds in English. This shouldn't be shocking but I have a feeling this will be hard to believe for some.

My mom has visited Baja California in Mexico many times and she says there's huge pockets of American retires living there and hardly any of them speak fluent spanish nor do they care to assimilate, they are just there because of the low cost of living and the pristine beaches. I wonder if the local mexicans rant about their refusal to assimilate on their forums

I would rather raise my kids in a place where things are less likely to happen than here in Miami. I am not saying that NC is the answer, but the chances of kids doing bad things are a lot less than Miami. Here there is everything. I hear gunshots in the middle of the night and I don't live in a supposed bad area.. When a person is killed over there is national news.. A person is killed here every 12 hours. Kids are doping every chance they get.. It is a big city, full of immigrants that is a bomb waiting to happen..

I hope this comment isn't taken as a racist remark because im far from it, even voted for Obama. But 90% of the time I hear of someone getting shot and killed in Miami or broward its usually a black guy. Latley there have been a few murder suicides by hispanics against their wives or girlfriends. Another big thing here committed majorialy by hispanics are DUI hit and runs that unfortunatly always usually end up as fatalities, but this is just as prevelant in any city or town regardless of racial profile. My cousin moed to NC not too long ago and she said its quite prevalent up there also and its always a drunk redneck or white kid. In my opinion, the main problem with Miami is it growing erosion of a middle class, its got one of the biggest variations of wealth amongst the very rich and the very poor similar to many third world countries. Being poor sucks, but when your constantly reminded when every other car is a BMW or bentely then it tends to bring out the desperation in certain people. Google Miami and you will consistently see it at the top of "poorest big cities in the US" lists, but you would never believe that driving thru Brickell, South Beach, Bal Harbour, Aventura.
