I plan on moving to that general area in the next couple years myself, after reading most of these posts one thing remains clear. The things going on in Miami exist everywhere. there are good areas, bad areas, crack heads, and church protesters in every city. Schools have good students and bad ones. as for kids, 12 year olds are in trouble at every school.
Miami has its share of problems but so do other cities, if you look at them all and average out the pros and cons you will find they are all about even. Lets face it, for all the people that say the schools are horrible, well kids still graduate from there with full scholarships to college. All the people that say its a crime paradise, people still get mugged in West Virginia so don't live in fear, what happens in Miami happens everywhere.

But these threads about MI-ami and high crime/low graduation rates are really starting to give me second thoughts. On my trips to visit family, I've definitely noticed a general lack of consideration for others. I mean, who answers a phone (OR TRANSLATES AN ENTIRE FILM) in a packed movie theater?! And then gets huffy when I suggest they act like considerate human beings! I'm starting to worry that this general lack of politeness is truly pervasive. Will my daughter, regardless of what school we place her in, be slammed up against a tide of selfish, self-absorbed kids? My husband and his family are Cuban and I truly love Latin culture, (you know there's a but coming) BUT I am also a little concerned with a strange hyper sexuality I think I've witnessed amongst many young Latin women there. Is there anything to that? Will my five year old be begging me for short skirts and lip gloss? Also, will I find anyone like me there? I'm white, protestant(ish), got a couple of relatively useless MAs from Berkeley, progressive, don't speak Spanish... yeah, it sucks to make yourself a stereotype, but there we have it. Also, are there any progressive schools in Miami ala San Francisco? Schools that have core values that focus on altruism, stewardship, the intellect over worrying about what others think about you? Am I going to be miserable there, people? Help...

I agree! Great City!
I was born and raised in Miami. I love the city!
Although, I haven't lived there since Hurricane Andrew. I grew-up in cutler ridge ( 1973-1992. )
I look forward to returning home, soon!

Boy are you in for some big changes.
How does it feel to be part of such a well known exodus?
Why did your family leave?

Regarding Shanlow's worries about "the hyper sexuality of latin females in Miami", yes, Latin girls wear more makeup, look sexier than their more corpse-like sisters but the "gringas" are notoriously more easy according to the guys here. I am not saying latinas are angels, but they do dress sexier. I would not rate them sluttier than girls elsewhere by far. I have been to other States and cities (especially California) and girls there drink, screw and are more liberal than here.

Wait till some of these Latin woman have kids or get over 40. Their coulos get out of control. I still have a very true stereotype imprinted in my head of these middle aged Latin women who are sooo over-makuped it's ridiculous. I think that Latin women go through the most dramatic transformation (for the worse) over time.

The sight of pale, sweaty, ruddy and overweight gringas in their 30's and 40's in men's t-shirts, tennis shoes and khakis at Disney World and the Swap Shop wasn't very encouraging either.

Cuba Libre
All poor women go through the most dramatic transformation after 40. More so in Miami and the US, with all those franchises that sell junk and all that pizza, snacks, and no walking except in malls.
Latin women are just like women in Southern Europe, they love to show off and dress in a provocative manner, they go top less or whatever, but that's about it. Latin women are far more parochial and conservative.

Really ... I guess you have not been to the mid west to cities such as Dayton , Columbus , Indianapolis or Cleveland where the majority is white and a large percentage of the women are drooling fat slobs .... the largest "culos" I have ever seen are on white women at Disney World on a weekend in the summer . Yes , white women from the west coast especially take great care of themselves ... but the southern and midwestern women are a different story .. some of the largest , most out of shape fat women I have ever seen are white women over forty ... your posts continue to prove that you have major issues with hispanics and you need to get out of South Florida ... maybe move to Cleveland or Baltimore ?
I have travelled all over the word and some of the most stunning women I have ever seen are Latin and in places like Brazil , Colombia , Venezuela and Argentina ... and gasp even Miami .... you are either blind or gay ( not that there is anything wrong with that !! ) if you do not see this .
