Default From Orlando Undecided About Moving to Broward or Miami-Dade

I am a single gay male (32yrs old). I was born and raised in San Juan, PR. I have been living in Orlando for two half years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education and four years of teaching experience in the Island. I have to admit that Orlando is beautiful, pretty quiet, cheaper, green landscapes, clean, nice weather... but it is not the place where I would like to live for a long time... for many personal reasons. Mainly looking for a gay friendlier place. In spite of that, I have got accustomed to Orlando.

Looking for the conveniences of an urban area, I am considering a relocation to South Florida as well to start there a Master in Mental Health Counseling. I also have the impression that there are more opportunities as professional counselor in South Florida (I know the competition is stronger). I would like to read about the experiences of people who have moved from Central Florida to South Florida as well "objective" comments.

Is there a big difference between both counties in term of quality of life, crime, traffic, nightlife, education, etc?

MDCPS is no longer accepting applications this year. In case you want to be a teacher. If they hire you it would be temporary as stated in the dadecountyschools.net website.

I am a 7th grade math teacher. MDCPS has a budget deficit and has cut many positions. The administrative positions have been reduced to the minimum and the hourly workers as well.

They have not laid-off teachers or hired any new teachers in the district. If you have a degree in education I recommend you to live in a city where the school distric is not facing a budget deficit.

Good luck

Eduardo,

I appreciate your advise! Certainly the economic crisis had affected hardly school districts statewide. However, my motivations for moving to South Florida are more personal than economic. In my case, I would not reject a teaching job because it is temporary... we have to have the mind of a conqueror in everything we do.

However, because I am looking for a change of career, I am not (and will not) focused only in obtaining a teaching job (in spite that I am certified and have met the requirements to be recruited). My primary interest is to find a job related to counseling... and it is a field that is on demand always particularly during crisis times like this.
