When people refer to "Miami " on these forums , what are they referring to the City of Miami ? ... as well all know that is a relatively poor and small area ... now I would not feel safer in the streets of New York , than I would in Key Biscayne , Brickell , Aventura , Coral Glable or Pinecrest ... now if "Miami " is Hialeah , Carol City , Little Havana , Miami Gardens or Overtown ... then I would agree with your sister ... but why the hell would you need to go to those places anyhow ?

I think she is including all of Miami-Dade in the "Miami" term including Coral Gables, Pinecrest, South Miami, Miami Beach, Kendall pretty much the places she hung out. Do i feel safe in Pinecrest, no not really, crime is up all over Dade county. A while back a woman was at the FALLS Mall in Pinecrest, putting her child in the car seat while she was forced into a car by a gunman who made her drive someplace and raped her in front of the child then dropped her off at the Home Depot. That happened in the middle of the day in one of our nicer parts of Miami. That is just one example, I can pull a few more out if I need to, and so I don't feel safe anyplace in Miami-Dade. Which is sad.
True you don't have to go to some parts of Miami, but you will have to pass through some. For instance west Coconut Grove, sometimes we have to drive through that part to get to Cocowalk.

I think those are just some isolated incidents that can happen to any safe area in the U.S. I mean there was even a huge incident at the Town Center Mall in Boca Raton yet I wouldn't consider that or the entire city of Boca Raton (with it's large ritzy class) to be unsafe. These types of incidents can occur anywhere and I don't think it's fair to judge an entire area based off of them. But do you really feel unsafe in areas like Aventura, Doral, Sunny Isles Beach, Bal Harbour, etc?

I can list many other crimes in these good areas. Sadly many people are to busy to talk to their neighbors so they don't have a clue what is going on in their area. Or they are not involved with their police precinct. Do I feel safe in the areas you listed, not really, which is sad. I really don't feel safe any more in South Florida for the most part. I wish I could live in a place that I could sleep with the windows open and not worry someone will crawl through the window.

BUT...I went to Miami as well...I found the drivers to be extremely normal (I lived in South America and Asia for years, so driving back in the U.S. is NOT a problem). I didn't feel it was crowded or road rage or anything whatsoever. Extremely organized and orderly just like anywhere else in the U.S. - no difference whatsoever.
Crime-wise...I drove around Little Havana..and I kept thinking it looked exactly like the neighborhoods I lived in New York City (Washington Heights and parts of Brooklyn)...I went to Little Haiti...and it looked like just about any city in Michigan (Detroit, Flint, Lansing, take your pick) except confined to a very very small little geographical area and that's about it.
I even heard I'd get robbed in South Beach...I went there...looks like standard U.S. tourist area...
In the end, I came to the conclusion that 99.9999% of the people who complain about Miami probably NEVER lived in a big city, never exposed to another language outside of English, and basically were a fish out of water.
YOu have to sometimes remind yourself how untraveled and how underexposed most AMericans are to nearly everything that is so commonplace throughout the entire world, to understand their strong hesitation with anything which isn't standard hamburgerland with no options kind of preference.

And when was this experience in Miami?
And when did you live in NYC pre or post Guiliani?

NYC is a very safe city...same with me...I took the subways anytime of day or night...no problem. Often went out drinking into wee hours of the night, and thought it was great.
I always felt that NYC was much, much safer than anywhere else in the U.S.
But, to 99% of the rest of the country, they perceive NYC as being a hell on earth with muggers on every corner.
Fortunately when I read all of the misinformation about NYC compared to living there...it gives me a lot of hope for places like Miami, that the 'talk' is way worked up.
All of that being said, I am sure walking around Miami would feel less safe than NYC, as in my experience, NYC was the safest city in the U.S. that I've ever lived.

For me, Miami was two years ago.
I lived in NYC 1998, 1999, and 2000.
