Pre Giuliani.
We were ok on the Lower East Side because Hells Angels headquarters were there and they were our friends. They didn't want any crap in their neighborhood.
Now that they're old guys they miss "the good old days" pre Giuliani ha ha.

Do the neighborhoods in Miami change very quickly like one block is safe and the next is not, or is there a general transition? Do you know when you are starting to get into a bad area or is it you make a wrong turn and your screwed?

I wouldn't say that. The whole Miami Beach island varies from good to fab. On the mainland it can be a little spotty but mostly the rough areas are vast and continuous.
Dude, go to South Beach. If you don't, you'll only wish you did. The best way to find a deal in SoBe is simply go there and walk around the neighborhoods looking for a for rent sign. If you want cheap, just pick a cruddy one. The cruddy ones are the ones with the most interesting people anyways. And even the worst won't be that bad. I knew rock bands that lived in garages. I'm quite sure there's still plenty of cheap beer and cheap sex in MB.

In some neighborhoods it can be nice on one street and then the next block it starts to get a little rougher and 3 blocks over you don't want to walk there. You just need to use common sense in those areas.

The southern part of Dade in particular has neighborhoods like those. Sections like Goulds, Florida City, and Homestead have some extreme poverty next to nice properties and gated communities. Tourists typically don't check out those areas anyway though.

I'm going to side with Bostonian on this one. I'm living in Brickell right now but I'm gonna recommend south beach for you also. Another thing, I know I was the same way as you before I moved down here, but DONT WORRY SO MUCH ABOUT THIS CRIME. hahahaha, I mean it exists, but really, you don't have to worry so much, you have my word if you are in Miami you'll feel safe and you are not moving to a war zone.
Go to south beach, you can walk at all times, at some of the best night life in the usa with serious babes. don't listen to the south beach haters either, its just like anywhere else, theres good women and bad ones... but the biggest difference is there's a higher concentration of sexy ones !
For the record, I see you are in Tucson... trust me Tucson is a lot dirtier and uglier than Miami and I'd feel more safe walking in Miami any day.

Yeah, tucson is crime ridden and ugly. I live in the most dangerous neighborhood in Tucson so I know crime. gangs, shootings, stabbings etc... i've seen it all in the last few years. I've just never been to a larger city with per say more dangerousness to it? Just airing on the side of caution. I'm not so much worried about crime, just accidently wandering into the wrong part of town
Also, I know the country is in a recession but how has the economy faired in Miami? Is it average or worse off than the rest of the U.S? I won't have a job when I move here, just money from college, so I would want to try and find something, anything. A roommate too that is cheap

People say the economy here is bad, do you speak spanish? What is your field you will be looking?
If you are coming here for a service type job (waiter etc.) you won't have problems.

I don't speak spanish which I know is not a good thing to not do in Miami. I could do a service type job if I had too. I work for a library now, but will be starting college as a transfer student.
