where does anybody say "you have to learn my language" ?? Instead of whining an complaining, try not giving them business. There isn't an official language, it was set up that way. If an immigrant has no reason to learn english, why should they? USA is a free country , nobody here is saying you they must learn English or you must learn Spanish. It seems many people here don't understand how capitalism works, we're strictly a free market, which means the employer and worker must be competitive in that particular area. If you are living in an area with high population of Spanish speaking people, don't complain if you can't speak spanish.. learn it. Everybody here should be happy that nobody is forced to learn English... when you start seeing this.. watch out.

Right on!
That's what America is all about.
The Founding Fathers didn't want a official language or a National Identity Document.
No official religion either, just some vague reference to God.
It seems that some people want to adopt the same idiotic absolutist and Jacobinean ideas discarded by the Founding Fathers.

I have no problem with people having english as a second language. that is quite common in Miami and I am perfectly fine with that. not knowing english though is wrong and I would not suggest it to anyone as in order to succeed in this country you should have to know english.

Yeah, to not know English will make it extremely hard to succeed for some people, but remember, everybody has different dreams and goals.
Not knowing English is "wrong" . mmhmmm, and why is that? If someone can be rich without learning English, all the power to them.. but I don't see that happening. In USA we have a pursuit to happiness if I am not mistaken? Your goals might be different from another person's and if they don't want to learn English, they might not be rich, but they can still be happy. I think you are just frustrated by it, but you have no right to be :P

That's the thing though, we're not entirely "capitalist" in the US. This IS still the United States. Miami-Dade County has the same legal status as any other county in Florida. I can't imagine you can get a professional, white-collar job without speaking English. Kids in school aren't taught to be fluent in both English and Spanish, they are only taught to know English fluently (I did have Spanish as a kid in elementary school, but it was a joke and only for an hour a week). I'm quite realistic about the language issue here, and realize this is how it is and it probably won't change for a long time (if at all). But it pisses me off because it kills Miami's reputation and attractiveness for business to the rest of the country. Hell, just look at the forums--notice how many people complain about Miami being a 3rd world cesspool where no one speaks English? (which I know is a gross exaggeration, but stereotypes exist for a reason) Again, I don't care that people speak Spanish, I care that there are many people don't know English when it's required. I also get your point that there is little incentive for people to learn English when they can get around with Spanish. That's the root of the problem! I personally think that English will become predominant again in the next 20-30 years when the primarily English-speaking Hispanic youth start to become the majority, but that's just my opinion.

Also I was looking at attending another campus of Miami-Dade as well, this one is the North campus located at N.W. 119th st & N.W. 32nd Ave. Is this an ok area to be in just going to/from school?

I don't know that area too well Daniel, but my gut feeling is I probably wouldn't choose that campus. Too far north and west. Why go there though? The main Miami-Dade CC is right in downtown MIA one bus ride from SoBe. That's where I would choose for sure.
7700 Collins is fine. But it's 70 blocks from the best part of MB and then you have another 2 miles to go to cross over to the best part of MIA. Go to the school in downtown and live in SoBe where you can take one bus no transfers and be right at school.

Those people that bicker against Spanish in Miami would still bicker if Cubans were English speakers.
The problem now is that first, second and third generation Cubans-Americans only speak Pidgin Spanish. They need to work on their Spanish to be fully bilingual.
American, European and Asian corporations in the area need staff fully fluent in Spanish and English due to the fact that Miami acts as the headquarter of all their Latin American operations.
Just take a look, just Spanish companies:
- Altadis USAInc - Cigars - largest in the world.
- Amadeus Global Travel Distribution North America - Travel services, one of the most important companies in this trade.
- Bancaja Miami Savings and Loan.
- Banco Atlántico one of top ten foreign banks in Florida.
- Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) second largest bank in Florida.
- Banco Santander Central Hispano
- Agencia de noticias EFE - The largest nrews agency in the world
- Grifols América
- Iberia Airlines
- Indra Sistemas
- Mapfre/Amstar
- ProcuraDigital .
- Teldat S.A. Telefónica Data USA,
- Televisión Española Internacional
- Terra Lycos,
- Texinter
There are 300 in total.

I like Miami. Its not Mayberry. And yes there is crime. But there is crime in Columbus, Ohio and Huntsville, Alabama too. You dont need to go to Miami to find crime or traffic or rude people. They are everywhere.

Miami is like that last turd that just wont ever go down the drain. It should have been over in 1985 and it has just kept circling the bowl over and over. Go ahead- argue about it- maybe im saying it in a nice way.

again... some of us are stuck here and cant leave. notice again- the state of the economy. there are alot of people in a bad mood. its not just me. I just choose to caution those who thought like I once did long before I got here- this is not the great place it looks like in pictures- its not even the great place you said you could live with if it wasnt what it looked like in pictures.

I've known that city in far worser condition.
Imagine the city with a large tire depot burning in the NW blackening the sky of the entire city, with a bunch of rabid people killing everybody passing by in the NW and Liberty City, and "marielitos" camping under the turnpike.
Summer 1980.
The previous year, almost 1000 drug homicides a year.
Before, the Federal Gov't cut Money Laundering, the city's main source of income, the entire economic activity halted, penthouses in Brickell went from 1.000.000 to 150.000.
Man, you live in peaceful times now, you've got to hold on some time, that's all.
Miami is now a paradise compared to the days of old.
