Default Key largo, florida

How in the world are all those Over the million dollar homes going to be sold in KEY LARGO! I could not believe over 680 homes are for SALE in KEY LARGO! And can you image living on a 30 mile long island being only 6 Feet above sea level, the Atlantic Ocean on your left and the Gulf of Mexico on your right. I have been through there years ago... but looks like no one will be buying those homes...

what you cant take away from key largo is that at the end of the day, it is in fact such a narrow island with only a limited amount of real estate to buy. There may be hundreds of homes for sale in the area but as things get better and people begin purchasing vacation homes again, the amount of available real estate will dwindle. The Keys has great fishing, diving, boating and snorkeling. Plus, Key Largo's close proximity to Miami makes it away from it all but just an hour + drive into the heart of Miami's nightlife, sights and proffesional sports. All big attractors for people looking for that perfect weekend getaway second home.

There is nothing here, it is a dull boring place for gullible investors looking for "paradise". The intense heat and swarming mosquitoes, combined with endless drought and persistant humidity kills all outdoor activity. To enjoy Key Largo you need to drink or fish or both. Remember, this was a very cheap place to live where Conchs ( the two legged kind) were common. Starting in the 80's drug money flowed in and this place has not been the same since. Eventually prices will return to reasonable levels once the US economy finally collapses. As for driving to Miami, you are a complete fool if you think it's always an hour drive. One accident and that drive increases to 2-3 hours. Going to the store here is limited to Publix, Winn-Dixie and Key Largo shopper. Ocean access is limited and there are NO BEACHES anywhere except sandbars at Pennekamp and Harrry Harris.

Sellers here are in denial. They think that outside investors will keep values high. Boy are they going to get a surprise!

I grew up spending the entire summer in the family weekend/summer house on abaco street in garden cove. while there are no sandy beaches there are plenty of places to swim. the diving was excellent as was the fishing. heat? what heat? I never felt any heat. the mosquitos were excellent table fare as were the no see ums. I love bugs. they are very tasty. what's not to love about every square inch of my beloved florida?

What does a single guy do there?

No kids and well off.... would u still live in the Keys?

I'm a Native, however growing up in north central Florida I never met anyone who lived in the Keys, or even wanted to go there and live. I suppose if I liked to drink Beer and fish and just be a Bum then the Keys might work for me..... but I want more out of life.

Living in Miami and working in the Keys, I can tell you that in an hour and a half, you are in the middle of it all. Of course, there is the stretch which can have an accident but emergency responders are well prepared and accidents, unless totally catastrophic, are somewhat quickly cleared and people are on there way. Nobody said the beaches are good, the Keys are the fishing capital of the US. You can swim off your boat. Thats about it. It takes a specific type of person to live there. Its not for everyone, but I will say again its great for those than can afford the second home, looking for a quick get a way from it all. Those looking for a bustling nightlife may disregard. By the way, coudlnt agree with you more about being single in the keys. Its not exactly the type of bumping with potential place. Everyone there seems pretty set.

Home values are decreasing by 1 1/2% per month. Investors would be wise to consider that.

I too think it will take a long time to sell property there. When the economy gets lousy, the first things to go are luxuries.

The Keys for a single guy, (unless he's a fishing/drinking bum,) wouldn't be a good fit. The Keys are very redneck, but if you like that, have at it!

Redneck would be an improvement! It has become very retiree/ Latin American as of late around here. It was very redneck when I moved here in 1990 but over time it changed. My neighbor across the street had a bunch of boats, and cars on blocks and a barefoot and pregnant wife. Further down the street we had the "boat people" who lived in the canal on their boat tied to their lot. Investors bought property and the conchs moved away. Only one remains and his yard still has plenty of "yard ornaments" including a toilet bowl collection. The fence and abundant trees keep the code enforcement out. Newer residents have gotten in trouble clearcutting trees and putting concrete or gravel yards. What I have noticed is that more and more of the homes are becoming empty and hopefully that means a drop in property values.
