I've probably made the Miami--> Keys (and vice versa) drive over 100 times. Literally. I know all of the speed limits from Key West to Miami. The views are beautiful, and you just have to be patient and know that US1 is not an expressway where you can go as fast as you want. If you drive more than 10 MPH (5 MPH in certain areas) over the speed limit, the cops will pull you over and ticket you. As the locals say (and my dad likes to repeat this), "relax, slow down, you're in paradise!"
I must say, if driving Overseas Highway has been one of the most miserable experiences of your life, I envy your life! The next time you begin to get sick of US1, imagine the fun of driving from Country Walk/far SW Kendall to Downtown Miami during rush hour.
With that said, however, traffic can be horrendous on holiday weekends and during the high (tourist) season. The worst I have ever seen is stop-and-go traffic (moving 0-15 MPH) for fifty miles from the Key Largo side of the 18-mile stretch all the way to Long Key.

I would if property values can fall to reasonable amounts in those areas. I do not want to spend the rest of my life paying 5 or 6 digit property taxes. My work is on the internet, buying and selling a wide range of products from security cameras to diesel injectors from Asia and eastern Europe. Generally anywhere with high-speed internet access is fine with me. It angers me that my father and I built this house and the area changed from the place nobody wanted to live to the island of nuts that rolled downhill. I am sure a lot of people in rural south Florida would gladly trade my home for theirs, but property tax is why I will never own overpriced south Florida real estate.

That is right on the border really and yes East Kendall is much , much nicer especially as you get closer to Pine Crest and Dade Land .

Rock, that is nowhere near the border of West Kendall. The address is SW 112 Street, not Avenue. In fact, I mapped that address and it is near SW 87th Avenue.... can't get more East Kendall than that. A few blocks east (across US1) is Pinecrest!

East Kendall, and that is a very nice area. Close to a lot of things (shopping, restaurants) and generally safe. Close to Pinecrest as well - which is a good thing.

This is a very nice area. However, you might want to know that SW 112th St is a fairly busy surface road because it connects West Kendall to US-1 (it doesn't get clogged up, but you do get a lot of local traffic). If you look at a map you will notice that the section of SW 112 St east of SW 97 Ave actually lines up with Killian Parkway (aka SW 104 St) as you head west (SW 112 St jogs south of Killian Pkwy).

Yup. You know O.J. Simpson used to live just yards away from 97th Ave. and 112th St. Now he's livin' in Vegas.

Unfortunately, most Miamians treat US-1 in the Keys like it is the Autobahn. There are on average 20-30 deaths a year on that highway south of the 18-mile stretch.

Like I said, most Miami trash is weeded out by the time you get past Lower Matecumbe. Key Largo and Islamorada are filled with high density condos and timeshares - transient peoples. Marathon and the lower Keys have less of this.
To the OP - Go with East Kendall if you can afford it. There are some beautiful old neighborhoods where some nice people still speak English. West Kendall is like being in another dimension - miles and miles of cheaply built townhomes and strip malls. Also, almost everyone is from "somewhere else", usually 3rd world Latin America, and few people speak English on a regular basis there.

Since he moved, I feel much better when I go to the Killian area. I wasn't sure exactly where he lived but I had heard it was around Killian Dr.
