I believe Indians are considered Asian by the US Census.

If you look at FIU.edu most of the top news is related to something Latin even if it is not so straight forward and you actually have to read the news article to see it is Latin related. The bookstore has numerous sections of books in spanish in this "American" institution. Almost everyone that works at the resturants, offices, and anywhere else on campus their first language is spanish and it is very noticeable at times.

On the homepage of FIU's website you will never, I repeat never, see a white male in any of the pictures of events at FIU. Similarly, all of the literature for prospective FIU students depicts students frolicking and studying and socializing around FIU's professionally maintained campus, and these pictures never show white males among the crowd. Only minorities, people in wheelchairs, etc. Even though whites are minorities on campus, they should at least be represented once in a while.

Get over it, it's like that at all universities. Most places put traditional minorities on their covers and pamphlets, not white non-Hispanics. The whole purpose is so they can emphasize their diversity. Luckily, FIU really is a diverse university with people from everyone.

I assumed you meant everwhere and not everyone. If that is the case that is funny LOL....No, FIU like south florida is far and let me say it again, far from being diverse. Diverse is people from different backgrounds together and getting along. That is wrong FIU and South Florida both are places that are taken over from hispanics and everyone else is second class citizens.
Most all events, conferences and discussions on campus is hispanic related (For goodness sake, how long is "FIU experts on Cuba" link going to be placed on the main page of the website?)
Before I attended FIU I was warned over and over again not to go to FIU as I would not like it for the reasons I mentioned above and that I would feel like an outsider. Well I hate to say it but they were right.
I was at housing the other day to pick something up for someone and I see an FIU housing brochure that was completely in spanish....Isnt this supposed to be an "International" university not a Latin American university? Where is the brochure in other languages? There were none.

Yeah, South FL is entirely Hispanic We are a real underprivileged second class minority here in Weston, where you an I are the only Americans left. Seriously, try getting over your xenophobia and start talking to people. I have seen no shortage of people of different backgrounds getting along down here.
Then again, this is the Miami forum and we are talking about FIU. If we are talking about Miami-Dade and FIU itself, then yes I agree.

How is this not diverse?
FIU:
55% Hispanic (of any race)
21% White (non-Hispanic)
10% Black (non-Hispanic)
8% Asian (non-Hispanic)
6% Other (non-Hispanic races)
People from all over the U.S. and the world in a huge city like Miami. How is that not diverse, please explain? One link on Cuba on FIU.edu does not mean the university caters only to Cubans, how does that make any sense? It's like saying there's a link on the College of Medicine and that means FIU only caters to the med students.

That actually is pretty diverse. That's not a solid 60+% majority.

Do people actually think that the Hispanic students exclusively hang out with each other and speak Spanish with each other?? Get real people, most of these kids grew up in Florida and speak English as their first and/or best language. One of my best friends went to FIU and graduated with a business degree last year. He is now working at UBS (large international bank) in Brickell and knows plenty of other successful individuals, most of whom aren't from Latin America and many of whom aren't even Hispanic for that matter. The school is pretty diverse, and it's pretty silly to suggest that even a large percentage of its students don't speak English well.

Everyone makes a choice for a reason. I think its fairly obvious to have a higher hispanic population at a state school in Miami. Most state school's don't attract a whole lot of out of state students, and considering 95% of the students are Florida residents it is probably going to represent the Southern Florida demographics pretty closely.
Well if I'm a close representation of Miami and its people then I can't wait to move on down
Student Body
collegesearch.collegeboard.com
1st-year students: - 95% In-state students
- 5% Out-of-state students
- 8% Part-time students
- <1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
- 4% Asian/Pacific Islander
- 9% Black/Non-Hispanic
- 68% Hispanic
- 16% White/Non-Hispanic
- 2% Non-Resident Alien
- <1% Race/ethnicity unreported
- 37% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
- 22% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
- 14% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
- 16% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
- 10% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
- 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49
