Default Are cubans in Miami patriotic americans?

I just asked a question about this in the El Paso forum (although I just got a new user name because I had problems with the old one). Anyway I figured it would probably be better to ask this question in the Miami and Los Angeles forum where Hispanics in many cases form more than half the population.

This isn't a racist question and I hope we can a good discussion but I was just wondering. The demographics of America are changing and I guess many people do wonder whether hispanics can be as "american" as every other immigrant group becomes or will their arrival cause more division between them and non-hispanics.

Yea, more so than most newer nationalities that have scampered into Miami in recent years.

The ones who have been here a while are patriotic. Recent ones, nooo. Same goes for other hispanic groups. Has to do with length of time here.

I think Miami going to become more patroitic the more generations like 1st and 2nd generations are raised here. The new Immigrants some still have citizenship in their former countries and are deffinitely not as patriotic or Americanized as the 1st and 2nd genertation will be. Someone once wrote on here that they think Miami will be like a Boston in the future. In the sense that they will be Americanized city but with a strong Cuban/Hispanic influence like Boston does Irish influence.

I think the older generation of Cubans are as patriotic as anyone else and their work ethics fit the American way of life. As for the newer arrivals, I'm just not feeling it.

Speaking broadly about ALL Hispanics/Latinos, the enlistment rates in our all volunteer army show that Hispanics are very patriotic (more so than non-hispanic whites on a percentage basis). I am a non-hispanic white so not trying to disrespect any group, just reporting the facts.

Yes, there are many "benefits" in terms of GI benefits. But there also many risks (like getting killed). So the fact that so many hispanics are willing to serve says a lot about their patriotism.

When people are referring to "new arrivals that have scampered in" who are they referring to? Who are these new arrivals to Miami?

Not another useless topic ... what is the point here other than to stir up the naysayers on this forum ... this entire CDF Miami forum is becoming absurd and a sounding board for bitter malcotents who get their jollies seeing the potshots that will be traded on this issue .

I think there's a fine line between patriotism and nationalism. And, in the older Cuban community, I see many signs of both.

There is also offer of citizenship that is given to LPR's who enlist in the armed forces ( Fast track to American citizenship: Join army - US - World - The Times of India (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/2190991.cms - broken link)

Add to that the fact that recruiters often focus on more impoverished areas using the promise of free tuition to those who cannot afford it. These areas are (usually) populated more by minorities than the population of the U.S. itself.

I don't think enlisting in the armed forces can make you "more patriotic" than someone else. Everyone has their reasons for choosing or not choosing to join.
