New to Miami, need help with location/subdivision
I just moved to Miami and was blessed to get a job in Coral Gables. Would like to stay close enough to purchase an affordable home, (obviously not Coral Gables) preferably in a good subdivision. I'd like to stay close enough to the city and beaches. Although I have seen some of the homes Homestead has to offer, I was told not to move out there for various reasons. Soooo, anybody with dependable info would be greatly appreciated. No little ones so schools not important! Garage is. Decent area a must! Please do not describe North, South, East and West. I'm a Native Newyawker and it's uptown, downtown, left and right.

If you already moved to Miami, why don't you drive around to the different neighborhoods to get a personal feel? Homestead is far, far away from Coral Gables.
There are some areas of Kendall (just south of coral gables) that have decent SFHs. Try google maps, if you don't know what i mean by "south" of coral gables.

LOLLL... I think that was funny and it finally answers MY problem with cardinal points. I'm from New Yawk too!
OH... There's an area close to the Gables, called The Roads. Just google that too. There's also a lot of really nice buildings along Miracle Mile (really 24th St., AKA Coral Way) and up to Douglas Road (37th Ave). The Roads has SFH too.

Affordable means...
I don't want to pay 5K or more for taxes or 400/month for maintenance.

* Not enough info...
-are you a family man? How old are your kids?
-are you worried about 'the commute'?
-are you comfortable living close to working class areas?
-what are your three most important needs where you want to live?... I have to ask this because there are too many people in Miami who live way beyond their means. That is why Miami is always #1 or #2 in forclosures in the country. Also, most cars worth more than $60k are rented or leased here...
Also, can you speak Spanish? Are you comfortable with living in an area where most people do not speak English on a regular basis?

Ok, so you don't want to pay more than 5k for taxes. A $250,000 house/condo/apartment will pay around 5k in taxes approx. So you are looking at less the $250k for something. With all the foreclosures around you can find some deals all over the city. I would start looking with in 5 miles of your work and see what pops up.

I agree with doggiebus, and I would narrow it down to the Kendall area.

Yeah, it sounds like some parts of Kendall will be your best option. You'll get used to the Nw Sw thing, we don't use uptown, and let's not even talk about our downtown. Our left is the Everglades and our right is the atlantic ocean.
