Miami needs to try and shake off its "refugee camp" status, especially for people from Latin America & Haiti, then people will take it more seriously. Sure, there are several major companies who have offices here, but for a Metro of 2.5 million and counting, the per capita ratio of "major companies : people" is lower than other cities of comparable size.
Not counted in 'major companies' : foreign credit merchants, currency manipulators, 3rd world banks, and "coffee bean exporters"...

What is a third world bank .... HSBC , Banco Santander , Banco Espirito Santo .... the above all have offices or branches on Brickell and are major banks on a world scale .... Brazil is a growing economic powerhouse and the other two are European players ... the only true "third world " banks I have seen on Brickell are a couple from Venezuela . Your disdain for everything Miami or Hispanic borders on the obscene ... like it or not and to be clear ... I would never live in Miami and dislike many things about the city ... yet it is an important and recognizable city on a world wide scale ... I have been all over the world and Miami is always recognized as a tourism , shopping , glamor and media city ... forget Latin America ... Miami is recognized and usually in a good light all over Canada , Europe and Asia ... you cannot say the same thing about Asheville , Greenville or your paradise of Charlotte , NC .... like or not it is the truth .
When I travel I am surprised how many people especially Europeans ... mention ties with Miami and surprisingly Houston , Texas . Moderator cut: Off Topic

Crisp
You were right in what you wrote in your "Orphaned" string.
People here live in matchboxes and drive matchboxes.
Rations in our expensive restaurants are ridiculous per American standards, even more so if the cook is one of those "Nouvelle Cuisine" clown. We are forced to drive inland 80 miles (away from tourists) to eat decent food at decent prices.

What's wrong with being a refugee camp?
Look at Switzerland, Monaco and Andorra, all are refugee camps.
Do you think that Andorrans, Swiss and Monegasque (all uncouth pirates) built their financial systems?
Refugee camps for the rich need pentalingual and trained people, not parochial and religious people.
Man, BSCH is the largest bank in the Euro zone....
Who cares if there are foreign credit merchants, currency manipulators, 3rd world banks, and "coffee bean exporters"?
