Depends..... Some areas I love and I think are among the nicest looking in the State and many parts of the country.
Examples of such:
Pinecrest, Coral Gables, Palmetto Bay, Coconut Grove, Indian Creek, Bal Harbour. all these areas feel very urban yet have a very nice, peaceful and picturesque feel to them....

Other suburbs are hideous and I personally hope they get renovated or in all this foreclosure mess, someone with a little more taste buys them and fixes them up a lil bit.

Examples:
Westchester, West Miami, Hialeah, houses off flagler etc.... Most are middle class neighborhoods that look are designed with NO CLASS or Taste what so ever. homeowners do what they want in these neighborhoods. some have normal, neat looking houses painted in normal colors with a nice grass front lawn while the house next to you painted the house pink, with bars over the windows and doors, ugly gates and tiled floors and just to make it look even worst, Flamingo's or random fountains over the driveway... YUCK! like I said, easy to fix if somebody with Good taste moves in.

Overall I do think Miami has Really Really Nice Suburbs but really tacky and disgusting ones at that....

oh lord. dade county is a fine place to live and anywhere within the county boundaries is "safe" as safe or safer than any other metropolitan area in the world.

nice is a subjective term. there are posters here who will say that my community, miami gardens is ugly and so forth yet to me it is the perfect place to live and I raised my family here with absolutely no problems what so ever. here I am able to live well within my means in a home with an excellent view on a pretty lake and with nearly 20,000 square feet of property allowing for a very nice tropical garden. the street I live on is inhabited with people of my class for lack of a better word who are for the most part family oriented and keep their homes in acceptable states of repair. there aren't too many folks who's homes are in foreclosure and there aren't too many folks who don't take care of their yards. I consider it a nice, tidy community.

posters like ac11 who look down their noses at communities like mine cause me to chuckle. I can't imagine myself ever feeling comfortable in a community that even dictates what color I might choose to paint my own home while taxing me to hilt and nannying me ad nauseum. you can keep coral gables and other communities of that sort.

but to each his own.

You can be on the other side of Florida in less than two hours. If that is the area we are to consider then I conside deep in the Everglades to be a bad neighborhood. You can get eaten by an alligator.

That's right, you are talking a very wide range here (without traffic of course), even up to Martin County due north on a clear day.

Monroe County, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County, Martin County, and Collier County (Naples) arguably have some of the nicest "suburbs", however you define it, in the US and beyond, you should be a bit more specific.

Just like any other big city, Miami has good & bad. It also depends on your definition of bad. Some people have very high standards

I feel like dadeguy. I live in Hialeah and I perennially hear the comments, innuendos, etc, about this city. I for one live in what I consider a nice neat home. I keep my lawn as trim and green as I can. Over the years I plant a few things here and there. For the most part my semi green thumb has allowed me to bask in the beauty of the various trees, shrubs, flowers and bushes that I have planted. My particular neighborhood is very quiet as there is restricted access from the main road. For the most part the iron bars are gone. Overall it's a good palce to live.

My take on it is that Dade County has more of the extremes than middle-class areas compared to most cities. Most major cities have poor areas, but I would say that Miami has more poor areas than most cities. Also, Miami has more rich areas than most cities.

No offense to the previous poster, but I would describe most of Hialeah as being poor and run-down since I have driven through there many times. That said, I do not think Hialeah is dangerous or crime-ridden. Seems to consist mostly of poor and working-class families just trying to make a living. Same thing with Little Havana. The buildings and homes tend to look run-down in both Hialeah and Little Havana. But at the same time I'm not scared to walk through them or drive through them. IMO none of the neighborhoods in Dade that are heavily Hispanic are dangerous. Most of the areas I consider dangerous are places like Opa-Locka, Overtown, Brownsville, Miami Gardens, and neighborhoods along the I-95 corridor within 5 miles to the east or west of 95.

The funny thing is that tourists who are visiting Miami usually stay in the areas that are very safe like Miami Beach, Brickell, Coconut Grove, etc and they have no business ever being in the bad areas. No tourist should ever be deterred from visiting Miami because of the "bad areas".

^^I largely disagree with that statement, even though Hialeah is not by any means a "wealthy" area it does have some certainly neat and well put homes that could easily past as middle class... as far as little havana is concerned i would say the same there are areas that are pretty bad but then again it does feature some nice old houses that could also easily past for middle class.
