What is happening to West Miramar? (Miami, Carol City: middle-class, renters, crime)

If you are black, you need to avoid West Miramar. It was a good neighborhood for middle-class blacks from around 1999 through 2006, but now there is a huge amount of tension that has built-up between Cubans and blacks in the area. The Cubans seem to be a majority in the area. I prefer Atlanta, GA, and will be moving there as soon as I sell my home in West Miramar.

I happen to be Cuban, and I can attest to the fact that we can be quite "racist", but not in an evil way. We get along with blacks, shoot our culture is strongly influenced by African descendants.

Anyhow, what has happened to you in West Miramar, that has made you feel like fleeing on the next plane?

Cubans are the offprings of Spaniards and Africans. Just tell them that your parents are Cubans and that will stop the hate.

First of all, I have nothing against any nationality, and I get along well with mostly everyone. Although, I sense a lot of racism from Cubans in the area, especially from my Cuban neighbors. Also, they always speak to me in Spanish when I go shopping at Publix, and I do not look Spanish. They are very rude. I just want to sell my house and move out of here.

What is happening is that unfortunately the white people are seeing black people spill on over into the predominantly white areas (west miramar). East Miramar and West Miramar have always been two seperate worlds and both sides haven't got a clue how different they really are. At any rate, I am not racist. But I can tell you that white people are not very fond of black people moving into their neighborhood because they think the property values will decrease and crimes will increase. I know it's sad..but it's true. Probably what you see on your local news every night has something to do with it. Personally, there are bad apples in every single race...whites, blacks...everyone. But that is just the stereotype blacks have unfortunately. It has gotten better, but still needs much improvement.

heydade, you hit the nail right on the head.

Actually, my parents live in West Miramar, and they moved there back in 1995, when it was all white. They have mentioned that as more blacks began to move into the neighborhood, so did crime. This is not racism, this is a fact. Actually, their front neighbor, who is black and renting, and who recently moved into the neighborhood from Opa-locka, got arrested about two weeks ago, when another neighbor caught him breaking into a neighbor's house.

When I visit my parents, I see black teens out in their parent's driveways, wearing wifebeaters and droopy pants, it is disturbing. It reminds me of Carol City, where I grew up. There are some very nice and decent blacks in the neighborhood, normally the ones that own. The "ghetto blacks" are the ones that are renting, or living off of section-8. Many say that a Realtor by the name of Shelly, is to blame for moving so many blacks into West Miramar.

What needs to occur, is that residents of West Miramar, need to push for incorporating a new city, the "City of West Miramar". You are then free to impose strict rules, which will drive the shady individuals out. At the moment, you can do nothing, because the perpetrators are black, and the politicians are also black. It makes no sense in having black politicians from East Miramar, govern West Miramar, when the majority who live in the west are still white. This occurred in Miami-Dade county years ago. White Anglo-Saxon's were the governing majority, until districts and cities were created, which put Cubans in control of their own neighborhoods.

Agree with both of the above until the last paragraph. If anything, the east side is what got neglected by the city, considering that in the 1980s that was considered a top area. Also, the west side has had a large black population for years although not a majority (still not). The bad element came from the increase in renters, not skin color.

What? That blacks cause crime to go up? In the US, that seems to be the case. Maybe it is not so in other countries.

You are absolutely right, "the bad element came from the increase in renters", but those renters happen to be mostly black. Like I said, the blacks that own are very nice and decent individuals, but the ones that rent are depressing the area. It's almost as if the blacks that have their stuff together get chased around by the ones that don't. This is the reason why whites end up not wanting any blacks in their neighborhood, period. They know that the bad apples will follow the good. It's sad, but true.
